Room 105 Newsletter
The only way to have a friend is to be one.
June 8th, 2016
Dear Room 105 Families,
As I write the last newsletter of the school year, the feeling is bittersweet. I'll try not to be too sappy. I am sad to say farewell (for now) to this incredible group of students and families, and at the same time, I am overwhelmed with pride in the children's accomplishments, and am very excited to see and hear about the wonderful things they'll do as first graders!
Indeed it takes a village, and I know that this year would not have been as special without every family's dedication and support. From bringing in healthy snacks, donating resources, and volunteering in the classroom and on field trips, you embody a loving and nurturing community, for which I am forever grateful.
I'll leave you with one of my favorite Dr. Seuss quotes that is helping me manage my end-of-year feelings, "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."
Now, on to the announcements!
· Work to Go Home
There will be work to go home this week and next week. This week you will see a purple packet on the counter in front of our classroom with your child's name on it. This packet includes various literacy work, math work, and artwork. You will see two math folders (one light blue, the other dark blue) from the last few modules that contain completed classwork, as well as the corresponding homework, which I encourage you and your child to do this summer to keep the mathematical juices flowing.
Next week I will be sending home your child's tree stitchery, 3D shapes, and kindergarten writing portfolio. They will be on the counter ready for pick up early next week.
· Juneteenth
We will be honoring Juneteenth this Friday, June 10th. The day will begin with an assembly and presentation about the history of Juneteenth, and will be followed by a "field day" and special lunch. Your child will have the choice of eating their home lunch, school lunch (if they buy it), or the special Juneteenth lunch. The "field day" will include many fun teacher-lead activities on the playground and in classrooms, which the kids can freely rotate between. Ms. Trevor and I will be facilitating the bubble station on the field by the little yard.
· Park Play Date With 4th Grade Buddies
To celebrate a year of sweet symbiotic buddy reading with Barry's 4th graders, we will be having a buddy play date at Cedar Rose Park next Thursday, June 16th. We will walk down to the park together at 10am, and will be there for roughly 45 minutes before walking back up to school. I do not need any chaperones, but you're more than welcome to meet us there! I included a permission slip in today's communication folder for you to sign and return.
· Last Day of School Breakfast
Our end of the school year celebration will be over breakfast next Friday, June 17th starting at 8:20 (just after drop off). My plan is to show a short slideshow (feel free to send me any photos from the year!), invite the kids to share fond memories and appreciations, and enjoy some yummy breakfast together. There is a food sign up sheet in front of our classroom. Here is the digital one:

Hope to see you there!
· Magic "C" Badges
The students learned a lot about letters this year, from the way they sound, to the way they look, to the different ways to write them. One of our big grade level focuses this year revolved around building fluency with identifying and writing lowercase letters, which they kids are doing beautifully. We call seven of these lowercase letters the "Magic 'C' Letters" because they include a "c" shape when writing them. They are, "a, c, d, e, g, o, q." This week the children are being recognized for their progress with Magic "c" badges!
Again, it's been an absolute joy and privilege to have gotten to you and your children this year. I wish you a wonderful summer break!
With gratitude,
Jonah Cohn
