We did it! The first semester is over. It has been quite a learning experience for everyone, and we greatly appreciate the support of our wonderful families in distance learning. There is a lot going on as move into the second semester, so staying strong as a community will be more important than ever. Fortunately, we have families that are amazing, kids who are showing progress, and staff who are working tirelessly to get the best results possible for our students. I'm so happy to work with you and your wonderful children!
This semester, we are starting out with goal-setting for students in their advisory classes. Our plan is that each student sets a goal for their academic performance this year and creates a plan to reach that goal. They will share this goal with their families so you should get an update by the end of the first week on your child's goals and how we will all work together to achieve them. Make sure you check in with your child's advisory teacher if you have any questions.
Classes should largely stay the same as semester two begins. The main difference will be electives and PE on Wednesday. Those times and classes may have changed so, make sure you check ParentVue and StudentVue before Wednesday to double-check your student's classes. Advisory teachers will also be helping on Tuesday so that all students know where they are going and when on Wednesday.
As we head into February and March, counselors will be reaching out to all students (incoming 7th graders after spring break) to forecast for next year. We'll be doing all this online, so make sure you check with your student to be sure they are getting everything submitted for next year.
Our district is working hard to give all students the opportunity for in-person learning as soon as possible. Check our district website for updates. At SMMS we are making sure every preparation is made to bring in as many students as we can as soon as we are able. Our custodial team and planning team have been working like crazy so we can go as fast as possible to bring students back into the building.
Even though we are in Distance Learning, we are trying to provide lots of ways for kids to connect to school and clubs. Here is a current list of what we have put together (with more on the way). We hope everyone finds something here that interests them, and we'll keep working to expand this list so everyone connects to a group.
We've been working all year on character development in advisory classes. This past month has been a focus on empathy. Check in with your student to see how they have worked to gain a better understanding about the perspectives and interests of others. We've also been celebrating and learning about different cultures we find at SMMS. Here's our current list of culture celebrations and we hope to keep growing it. Let me know if you want to add something about your family's culture by emailing me at welchj@hsd.k12.or.us
