Fall 2021, Quarter 1
Take a look by grade level below to see what each grade has been working on in literacy and math with Mrs. Safran (grades 1, 2, & 3) and Mrs. Atri (grades K, 4, & 5) this quarter!
5th Grade
Math
Another real-world project explored in 5th grade math was called "Snack Shop." Students "visited" a make-your-own trail mix store where they could select from scoops of different trail mix ingredients. Students then calculated the cost of their trail mix creations, along with percent discounts, and calculated the change they would receive.
Decimals are all around us and something we encounter on a daily basis. Students now understand the importance of being able to add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals and how it applies to their daily lives!
Literacy
Students then completed a Jacob's Ladder activity looking at the importance of the Articles to them personally, what might happen if human rights weren't protected around the world, and what the implications are of the UDHR being translated into 500 different languages. Students also explored the impact that the UDHR has on freedom, justice, culture and individuals through a Cross Impact Matrix. Finally, students selected an Article they wanted to illustrate and created posters to visually represent what their Article says.

Math
Literacy
Students first learned the difference between "tone" and "mood" by watching two versions of a trailer for the Disney movie, Moana. They looked at the differences in the trailers and how they contributed to the mood of the trailer. They then applied what they learned about how to determine the mood of a text to the poem, finding evidence to support their ideas from the text. Students also used evidence to discuss the theme (power isn't permanent), setting (desert in Egypt) and language (use of "broken" words and the "s" consonant) used in the poem through creation of a Tree Map. Students then took those elements from the Tree Map and looked at how they worked together to create meaning in the poem through a Cross Impact Matrix.

Resource Spotlight
Breakout EDU is an interactive game platform where students work together to solve puzzles and unlock codes to “break out”. Think of it as an “escape room” game for the classroom - aligned with curricular content, standards, and skills. Students use collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and communication to find solutions to a variety of problems. Mrs. Safran and Mrs. Atri use BreakoutEDU in grades 2-5.
