Many Hands, One Mason!!
August 30, 2019
Dear Mason Families,
Big shout out to our amazing Mason PTO! They put on an outstanding Back to School Social Thursday and the turnout was terrific! We hope the event showcased just how much community means to us at Mason!
Safety is the number one priority at Mason. Next week, as our learners transition into their daily school routine, we welcome parents to walk their child(ren) in the building and to their classroom for the first two days (9.3 and 9.4) of school. Starting Thursday, we will ask parents to let their child walk into the building by themselves. We will have multiple adults at each door to help students who might have anxiety or need direction as to how to get to their classroom. Thanks in advance for following our school rules and keeping all our students safe!
Have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend,
Roy Bishop, Jr.
Toys, Slime and Sports Equipment:
Please make your child leaves their toys, slime and sports equipment (basketballs, footballs, football gloves, etc...) at home. We will provide all the sports equipment they need during school hours. We are trying our best to limit the distractions to the educational environment and we appreciate your support. Thanks!
Birthday Treats
Dear Mason Families,
Due to the increasing number of students with medical conditions and various food allergies, we don't allow birthday treats to enter the classroom. Holiday and classroom celebration will have a strictly enforced list of safe food options to choose from. Classroom teachers will individually connect with their families to explain what products can and can’t be brought into the room for classroom celebrations.
The start of a new school year brings about many challenges. One of those challenges is creating a safe environment for students with food allergies. Educating the staff, students and community is essential to creating that safe environment. A startling statistic is that every grade level has multiple students with varied types of food allergies, whether it is to nuts, dairy or wheat. The severity of each child’s allergy is vastly different. Some reactions may be minor, but we have others whose exposure to certain foods could be life-threatening. Exposure can occur from ingesting food or through contact with any surface (desks, door handles, etc.) that another child has touched after eating the allergy-causing food. Thank you for helping us keep Mason as safe as possible.
The Mason staff will continue to provide reminders to our community about the importance of keeping all students safe.
We understand that for some this will be difficult, but our decision was based on making an environment that is safe for ALL learners.
Thank you for understanding.
Sincerely,
The Mason Staff

Mason Parking Lot Rules for Student Drop Off and Pick Up
Parents/families… We need your help in the Mason parking lot! Mason is committed to maintaining a policy of safety and respect regarding transportation and parking. The following guidelines have been established to promote this policy. Please read this carefully as you participate in dropping off and picking your child up from school in the near future. Thanks for your support in helping to keep our parking lot safe and accident-free. Please do not park in the numbered parking spaces as they are designated for your child's teachers.
Parent/Driver Expectations:
Students that are being driven to school should be dropped off curbside (sidewalk) in the driveway circle. To assist with the flow of traffic, please pull your car forward as far as possible in the circle. We do not want any students walking across lanes of traffic or through the parking lot. Please do not leave any vehicles unattended in the circle. If you need to come in the building, please find a parking spot that isn’t numbered or park on Anita or Charlevoix St.
You MUST obey all traffic laws on the streets surrounding the school at ALL times. We will be enlisting the help of law enforcement throughout the year. Parking lot speed is 5 MPH.
Understandably, mornings and afternoons can be extremely hectic as we are all rushing to get to many different places. However, our students’ safety has to be our first priority. Therefore, please take time and drive slowly through our parking lot. Your cooperation with these basic safety rules is greatly appreciated.
Again, our goal is to make sure that that we create a safe environment for all students and families. Thank you very much for your support and cooperation.
As always, thanks for taking the time to read our Mason Weekly Update. Please feel free to contact me if you have important information that you would like to see include in our next Update. Have a great week!

Parents/Visitors at Mason
For the safety of all of our students, all parents and visitors must go directly to the office to sign in and obtain a visitor’s pass. This pass must be worn and visible at all times while in the building.
September’s LIM and PBIS Topic: Be Proactive (Respect) and hallway behavior
Hallway Behavior- We are working extremely hard at making sure we are conducting ourselves in a positive way in the hallway. Our goal is to make sure we are keeping our school as safe as possible and part of that is making sure we understand the expectations for the hallway. Please ask your child to tell you what they are expected to do in the hallways of Mason.
Be Proactive: I have a “Can Do” attitude. I choose my actions, attitudes, and moods. I don’t blame others. I do the right thing without being asked, even if nobody is looking.
Hand Signal that goes along with Being Proactive: Place your thumb to your chest.
DOCTOR NOTE? ATTENDANCE UPDATE
The GPPSS has modified attendance codes for our district to keep consistent records at all schools. What's important for you to know?
Medical appointments now require a doctor's note for an excused absence.
Tardies are now split out in six minutes increments, giving a better picture of our students arriving late.
Attendance is a serious matter. We need to know where your child is when they do not show up for regular school hours. Please use the attendance line 313-432-4401 to report an absence prior to 9:00 a.m.
Thank you for all your help!

Kids Club News
Below are some changes to how Kids Club will run this year. Please read carefully and call them if you have any further questions.
Parents have always signed up for specific Kids Club days in the past, however, this year parents are being asked to commit to their schedules by pre-paying for the day(s) they have registered for. This helps us maintain our state mandated ratios and to stay in compliance with the law. If a student is signed up for a specific day(s) that he or she does not attend, that day(s) will be credited to their account.
Parents are responsible to inform our office of any scheduling changes that need to happen according to their families needs. This can be done as far as one month in advance or as soon as the Friday of the week prior to the scheduling change needs, depending again on each family and their specific needs.
Please review the link below regarding our updated Kids Club policies and contact Kids Club with any questions or concerns.
