September 2021 Update
Where are you headed after high school? If you're not 100% sure...check this out!
The ASVAB Career Exploration Program (CEP) is an excellent career planning resource for students to explore the full-spectrum of career options and paths to reach their ultimate career goals. The program involves students taking a free skills assessment and then cross-referencing and reviewing their results in a Career Exploration Workshop. The workshop is designed to explain the ASVAB score report to students and then allow them to align their strengths and interests with career options to explore and create a post-secondary plan. Students will learn how their strengths, skills, and interests measure against a broad range of career options and can then create a post-high school plan.
Dispelling some Myths...
The ASVAB is not just for military entrance and taking it does not result in a requirement for students to join the military. In fact, Friendswood High School never releases scores to recruiters, but 11th & 12th grade students can choose to "opt in" to release scores for military entrance if they choose.
Who should take the Assessment?
Any students who are struggling with or do not have a clearly defined or clearly developed post high school graduation plan should take the ASVAB. Students wishing to join the military upon graduation from high school should also take the ASVAB. The test is open to 10th -12th graders, but is considered practice for 10th graders. Students in 11th & 12th grade can use scores for military entrance if they choose, and the assessment is available each year.
When can it be taken?
The ASVAB will be administered once in the Fall and once in the Spring for the 2021-22 school year.
Fall Test Date: Wednesday, Oct 6th from 8:40am to 12:30pm in the FHS library. Students can sign up for the exam anytime between Sept 22nd at 8am and Oct 4 at 4pm. Students should check their FISD emails for a link to sign up for the test. The follow-up Career Workshop will be held Friday, Oct 29th at 8:40am- 9:32am in the FHS library.
Spring Test Date: Tuesday, Mar 1st from 8:40am-12:30pm in the FHS library. Students can sign up for the exam anytime between Feb 16th at 8am and Feb 28th at 4pm. Students should check their FISD emails for a link to sign up for the test. The follow-up Career Workshop will be held Thursday, March 24th at 8:40am- 9:32am in the FHS library
Exploring Scholarship Opportunities
The thought of sorting through hundreds of scholarships may seem daunting, but the search does not have to be overwhelming. Check out these reliable scholarship search tools to help explore the wide range of opportunities that exist for students.
One of the easiest tools is through CollegeBoard's BigFuture Scholarship Search Tool. This tools allows students to "find scholarships, other financial aid and internships from more than 2,200 programs, totaling nearly $6 billion. Enter as much information as possible to find the most matches."
The nation's largest database, Cappex Scholarships, allows students to create a free account, enter personal information including GPA and test scores, and matches students to scholarships from their multi-billion dollar scholarship database. This search engine also rates scholarships in two areas: effort to apply and competition level, allowing students to determine where to best spend time and energy when applying for scholarships.
Unigo allows students to browse scholarships prior to setting up an account. It also matches students to over 3 million scholarships after students set up a free account and scholarship profile. Students can also save essay questions to more quickly fill out future applications.
Local organizations in Friendswood and surrounding communities also offer dozens of local scholarships to students in our community. There are a couple of ways students can stay aware of these opportunities. The best way to find these opportunties is for students to log into Xello using their FISD email account and password. Once in the Xello dashboard, students will do the following to find local scholarships:
- In the square section to the right, under Goals & Plans, click on College Planning
- Scroll or locate the green Local Scholarships banner
- In the Local Scholarships banner, click on the "Search for Local Scholarships" button on the right.
