Sunnyland Elementary

"The Scoop"

A Note from the Principal

Greetings Sunnyland Families,

We are excited to move to a four day/week in-person schedule for our 4th and 5th graders! Starting April 26, all K-5 Sunnyland students will be in person Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday from 8:00-1:30, with Wednesdays continuing to be used for morning meeting, remote learning, family engagement, collaboration and professional development for staff. The daily schedule will remain the same in terms of arrival, dismissal, specialists and lunches. If you have any questions about this change please don't hesitate to reach out.

In other news, construction for our new school is moving right along. Thank you for your patience as we navigate portable moves and utility work. I'm including a picture of the next two construction phases that will take us up to the end of this school year. Although it can seem a bit disruptive, I have found that our students are excited by the construction changes, as we are capitalizing on this opportunity to learn firsthand about building a school.

Have a wonderful day, and I hope you are all able to enjoy this sunshine!

Warmly,

Amy

Kindergarten registration is open for fall 2021

Registration for kindergarten has begun in Bellingham Public Schools. All children who will be 5 before Sept. 1, 2021 can be registered for kindergarten. Families can register their kindergartner online through the link on our kindergarten webpage. Registering now helps us hire staff, balance our classes, connect with families and ready our schools to welcome our kindergartners.

All children who are currently enrolled in Promise K will automatically be enrolled in kindergarten for the fall and do not need to re-register.

We plan to start in-person learning at every elementary school this fall with strong safety protocols in place. We will be ready to support our early learners and welcome the class of 2034 to our schools.

Kindergarten open house videos and virtual tours will be posted on school websites and sent to registered kindergarten families in May.

To find out more about attendance areas, registration and childhood immunization schedules, please visit bellinghamschools.org/kindergarten or contact our elementary schools directly. And thanks in advance for letting a friend or neighbor with a future kindergartner know the registration window is open and ready for them!

Meet our new Office Assistant/Attendance Secretary Karla

I was born in Puerto Rico, a small island in the middle of the Caribbean with a rich heritage mix of African, Spaniards and Native Indians. Yes, we are 3 different races combined! You’re probably wondering why I moved so far away from home?? Well.. when I was 9 years old, we left the island because my dad was transferred to work in the USCG station in Miami, Florida. There my mom worked as a teacher and she inspired me to work around children. When I was 17 years old, we were transferred again but to the Bellingham, WA station. Here we discovered a small paradise of kind and peaceful people. This was a perfect place to pursue my passion to work with children and now I am honored to be working at the Bellingham Public Schools district as an Office Secretary at Sunnyland Elementary School.
