A Message from Principal Jackson

Hello Miner Families,

I hope this update finds you and your family well!

This week starts week one for Summer for all of the staff. After students last day on May 29th, teachers and staff engaged in two plus weeks of professional development. We are excited for the work that our teacher engaged in and the well deserved break they are starting.

As we enter into summer this year it with a great deal of uncertainty for what next year holds. As many of you know, DCPS engaged with teachers and families through surveys about 4 different option to re-open school in the fall. Just like I am sure you are, we are eagerly awaiting clarity on what next year will look like. Before teachers left for summer break each team spent time working to norm what both virtual and hybrid learning could look like for next year so that once we know the DCPS plan we can quickly adapt the Miner Plan to fit those parameters.

We had an amazing virtual and drive-by recognition for our scholars in Pre-K 4, Kindergarten, and 5th grade. A huge shout out to those teachers and staff who planned and executed the event. Congratulations to all of this students and their families.

The personnel committee and leadership team have been working diligently to complete our staffing for next year. We have filled a number of vacancies already and are scheduled to interview candidates for the last two available positions this week and next.

As most of you know, AP Townsend (now Principal Townsend) will be leaving us. This Friday (6/26) is her last day at Miner as she transitions to be the Principal at Houston Elementary School. We are very sad that she is leaving us but incredibly proud of her and her success. As a result, the Personnel Committee will begin to interview candidates next week to fill the Assistant Principal Vacancy at Miner.

Beginning next week, we will re-start our virtual recesses for students! Members of the climate and culture team will host sessions each Tuesday for different grade level bands (based on NEXT YEARS grade level!). Because this news letter is posted publicly, I am choosing not to share the links in order to protect students safety from having someone join the Zoom Recess without permission. Links to the grade level recesses will be sent by the end of the week via Class Dojo and Zoom. For anyone that hasn't received it by Friday at noon they can also email me directly for the information. Recess times will be as follows:

- Pre-K 3 (new students) and Pre-K 4 - 9am on Tuesdays

- Kindergarten and 1st Grade - 10am on Tuesdays

- 2nd and 3rd Grade - 11am on Tuesdays

- 4th and 5th Grade - 12pm on Tuesdays

(remember that these are based on what grade your student will be in next year)

Below this message is a number of updates. I am going to work on weekly updates over the summer but note that future updates will be much shorter as information is not changing as rapidly right now until decisions are made on returning to school in the fall.

DCPS Schools remain closed to normal business at this time and teachers are on leave starting this week so if you need anything from the school, here are the best contacts to use:
