The Will to Lead
Part III: The Skill to Teach
Recognizing the Need for a Responsive Pedagogy
"Before we can enact a responsive pedagogy, we must be able to simply recognize that there is a need for it in the first place. When it comes to most indicators, we must consider the system a collective failure (if measuring for success of 100% of students). [And] looking at just one factor--high school graduation rates--demonstrates why this must be so. One third of all students fail to graduate on time in the US, and only half of African American, Latino, and Native American students graduate on time (New American Foundation, 2008). With numbers like these, few would argue that we need to do better and do differently. If we are to improve results, we must reflect more intensely and deeply. Teachers must know the learning intentions and success criteria, and when the goals are not met, there has to be reflection and discussion around instructional needs (Hattie, 2009)."
