How Do I Turn This Thing On?
Resources for Tech Basics in Intermediate and Elementary
Google Drive
We are going to take a few minute(s) and go through it. Remember that this is an introductory course, so feel free to ask questions.
Here's a great ebook by Kasey Bell.
It's great to print and have at your desk or add to your Drive for quick reference.
And PLEASE remind me to show you Ctrl+Shift+S in Google Docs. Great for non-readers and typing lots of words!
Chromebooks
EVERY STUDENT at HISD has a school email address. For instance bobbie.b.bocat@student.hisd.com
Their password is HISD##### (their student ID)
It would be GREAT to make a chart of their logins to keep in your classroom notebook. This way you can quickly tell them if they forget their passwords. Here is a password keeper if you would like it.
Remember that Chromebooks are essentially just a computer that uses Chrome and Drive to save things. If you are moderately comfortable with Chrome you will LOVE the Chromebooks.
iPads in the Classroom
Everyone will need to be enrolled in Airwatch. It sounds scary, but this enables us to buy apps for the district in bulk prices. If your principal or curriculum department purchases them in bulk, then we can send them out.
If you break your iPad, then please let your campus secretary know so that they can get it sent to Apple for repair.
Pick FIVE apps to concentrate on this year. Use them to enhance and teach your TEKS.
LIMIT your apps as they WILL fill up your iPad.
Here are some creation apps if you are interested in going beyond.
My five Faves:
- pic collage kids
- Adobe Spark (page, post, voice)
- I-nigma (QR code reader)
- Padlet
- educreation, showMe, or any demonstration app.
SmartBoard
Find free smartboard lessons made by teachers FOR FREE on smartexchange.
You can search by topic or by TEK. You must create a free account to browse.
Here are some tips for basic smartboard tips and tricks.
iPod Nanos
- Use nanos in small groups for having students create a video of themselves reading for fluency.
- The elementary grades have nanos pre-loaded (by Sandy Brumett) with read alouds.
- Video support tutorials
- Speech – a student videos himself reading or talking and reviews to listen for correct pronunciation, learning to self-correct
- Students video an explanation of how they worked a math problem, etc.
- For ESL - Students video, pointing to objects or holding sign to it, as they name them
- Great at intermediate for recording audio on a test. If the kids do not want it read aloud in front of people, then they can just listen to the nano.
PLC meetings, Chrome, Incognito
To open a new incognito window: use Ctrl + Shift + N or go to the three lines icon and choose New Incognito Window.
Chrome Bookmarks!
- Organize your bookmarks
- Top 9 bookmarks show up on your bookmarks bar
- Click and drag to organize what order you want to see them
- New bookmarks are sent to the bottom of list
- Right-click and add a folder to group favorites
- The Chrome clipper (box when you click the star) will intelligently suggest a folder for your bookmark when you save it
