1. Scholarships!
Last year, over $250,000 was provided to graduating Lacey seniors from local scholarships alone! The pride in Lacey Township is tangible in the scholarship awarding efforts. On January 30th, seniors learned about the Class of 2023's scholarship opportunities. As of the release of this newsletter, the scholarship application is officially OPEN!
Scholarship applications are multi-pronged, and include a collection of a student's history, likes, interests and community contributions. In addition, the scholarship essay provides an opportunity for students to bring their heartfelt life experience and future plans into consideration for their donors. Students should complete every aspect of the scholarship application with utmost sincerity.
To that point, students are responsible for submitting their own scholarship application. Of course, assistance in proofreading may occur through LTHS staff or peers. Also, family members may assist by sharing their in-depth knowledge about family history, which is required for some scholarships.
If any senior or their family has questions regarding the scholarship process, they may be in direct contact with their counselor. In addition, the Scholarship Coordinator of LTHS is Mrs. Chris Hansen, one of the fabulous Secretaries in the Guidance & Counseling office. She may be contacted directly as well.
For further information, seniors and their families are invited to review the scholarship presentation through this link. All linked applications and supporting documents within this are LIVE, as of the release of this newsletter.
**SUBMITTED AND COMPLETED SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS ARE DUE NO LATER THAN 2:00 PM ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2023. This is a firm deadline.**
2. UPstanders
UPstanders (noun):
A community-engaging anti-bullying program that facilitates celebration, family togetherness and local economy stimulation.
LTHS Guidance & Counseling Department is coordinating a new program called UPstanders. UPstanders recognizes students on a monthly basis for contributing to a positive school climate, aligned with positive traits, detailed in the "LION'S PRIDE" acronym.
This month, for "S", we are recognizing one student per grade level that exemplifies being a SERVANT! Students were nominated by LTHS staff.
Each UPstander will be rewarded a gift card to a local restaurant. Parents will be strongly encouraged to take their whole family to this family dinner.
As our January UPstander partner, we are very thankful to the GERMAN BUTCHER for their sponsorship of this month's gift cards!
The spirit of this program is multi-pronged and seeks to achieve the following:
1. Encourage the facilitation of a positive school climate;
2. Celebrate our youth for being contributory to a healthy community;
3. Engage our local small businesses;
4. Promote family togetherness through a meal.
As research shows, it is often through a positive family environment that students increase their overall sense of belonging— and those with a strong sense of belonging have prosocial behaviors, helping to facilitate a positive school climate.
We appreciate the German Butcher's partnership, our student’s positive behaviors and our nominating staff, and are pleased to announce January's UPstanders:
Savannah August
Lori D'Aleo
Aiden Schmitt
Austin VanZant
Congratulations to these young adults, their parents and their families! Enjoy a meal at the German Butcher celebrating this success!

3. Spring College Fair: March 28
March 28: RWJBarnabas Arena (Toms River High School North)
Students and parents alike inquire regarding the best time to begin preparing for college. Though applications cannot be submitted prior to the summer before senior year, preparation can come in a variety of forms. First and foremost, families should become informed about potential collegiate options.
Ocean County School Counseling Association (OCSCA) makes this especially doable during their college fairs. Typically held in the Fall and the Spring, the second OCSCA fair is scheduled to be at the RWJBarnabas Arena, attached to Toms River High School North, on the evening of March 28th, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Each representative is truly an expert on their college and will provide a wealth of information to students and families of various backgrounds.
See this flyer as a visual for this "Save the Date!"
We encourage students and parents of all grades to attend!
4. Free SAT Preparation for Juniors
Starting in February, our current juniors are being offered FREE SAT preparation! Lacey Township High School is piloting a program that is $0 cost to our students. This free SAT preparation is being offered through online or in-person options.
Juniors who are interested may complete this registration form no later than Feburary 15, 2023.
Students who have received their PSAT score results may click on the SAT icon to create a free Khan Academy account. This will provide personally tailored instruction, based upon their expressed strengths and limitations from the PSAT.
5. Lacey's Junior College Planning Night
Juniors and parents of juniors are invited to attend the annual Junior College Planning Night on Wednesday, February 8 at 6 PM. This event will occur in the Lacey Township High School Lecture Hall.
During this informational session, Mrs. Stephanie Farnkopf, our College/Career Counselor, alongside Dr. Leah Purpuri, our Supervisor of Guidance, will review post-secondary education planning, and appropriate timelines for the Spring and Summer leading into senior year.
No RSVP is required to attend! We hope you can make it!

6. Mental Health Spotlight: Set Intentions, Not Resolutions
Studies indicate that many people who set New Years' resolutions struggle to maintain them after a few weeks. Why is this so? It may be because the busyness of life can become distracting, and prioritizing a new rhythm can feel overwhelming.
As January comes to a close, let us be encouraged by the idea to set intentions for 2023, instead of resolutions. This will allow a growth mindset with opportunities for a daily intention reset.
