Room 8 News

Mrs. Fitzgerald, 3rd Grade

November 13, 2015

Hello Parents,

Thank you so much to everyone who donated to our turkey basket! We have enough food to feed well over one family! Just a reminder that all donation items are due by the end of today (Friday).

We had a very special afternoon today...we had our Marble Jar Party! The class has been working together to earn marbles and they finally filled the whole jar last week! So, today we watched a movie, and ate root beer floats and popcorn. Congratulations, Room 8!

This week in reading we focused on literary elements: character, setting, and plot. We also learned how to make inferences in a text and supporting inferences with evidence. We read a play, which was a Native American myth about animals and fire. We also continued reading James and the Giant Peach, and completed an event map for chapter one.

In grammar we learned all about main verbs and helping verbs, as well as contractions. In writing we continued working on our How-To essay final drafts, which we are using the "Pages" app on the iPad to create.

In math we learned how to write large numbers using words. We learned how to identify the place value and value of a digit in a large number, and how to write large numbers in expanded form. We learned how to multiply three- and four-digit numbers by a one-digit number using the multiplication algorithm, and how to identify the missing addends with a sum of 100.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

We will be having MANDATORY parent-teacher conferences on Monday (11/23) and Tuesday (11/24). The conference sign-up sheet is posted on Ms. Quinn's office window. Please sign-up as soon as possible, as the available times will fill up quickly. Also, keep in mind that this is an adult-only conference, so please make childcare arrangements.

During our conference we will go over your child's 1st quarter report card, behavior, honor roll, and any other questions/concerns/comments. Also, I will be keeping next week's reading and math tests to go over with you during our conference.

I look forward to meeting with you all!

Thanksgiving Turkey Basket

Merryhill School will be doing its annual Thanksgiving Turkey Baskets. Our Merryhill Leaders will be helping the community by donating to the San Jose Family Shelter. While you are making plans for your Thanksgiving, please consider reaching out and helping those less fortunate. We invite everyone to participate in this event and with your generosity we can make a difference in the lives of those who need a helping hand this year!

A donation sign-up sheet is located by the take-home files. Please bring in your donations to Room 8, no later than Friday 11/13.

For every class that donates all the ingredients on the list, Merryhill will donate a turkey. All Turkey Baskets will be delivered on Tuesday 11/17 by our student council to Family Supportive Housing Inc. in San Jose.

School Closure Dates

Just a reminder that there will be no school Monday (11/23) through Friday (11/27). Daycare is available for students who are enrolled in the after school program on Monday (11/23) and Tuesday (11/24).
