5 Essentials Survey

Brimfield School District 309 will join the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) in the eleventh statewide survey of school climate and learning conditions. The survey provides a unique opportunity for students, teachers and parents to have a voice in improving their schools. From January 11 through March 11, students and teachers will be asked to take a 25 -minute research-based survey to help identify strengths and weaknesses in their school’s learning environment. The parent survey supplement will also be administered during the same survey window. These surveys will serve as an opportunity for schools to reflect on progress since the last statewide implementation. The Illinois 5Essentials Survey provides a comprehensive picture of a school’s organizational culture in an individualized report measuring five “essentials” critical for school success:

● Effective Leaders

● Collaborative Teachers

● Involved Families

● Supportive Environment

● Ambitious Instruction

A Note from Our Counselor

The theme for February has been kindness and including others. The stories Mrs. McGrath has read include Recess Queen, Enemy Pie, Stuck, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, and Everyone Sparkles in Their Own Way. In groups and individual sessions we have worked on study skills, teamwork, conflict resolution, problem solving, and mindful breathing.

The theme for March will be problem solving and building coping skills toolboxes through classroom lessons, group sessions, and individual sessions. We will also focus on test taking strategies leading up to the IAR testing for 3rd-8th graders.
