October 20 & 21 - No School
Many thank go to those that volunteered their time to help make the Roadrunner Rally the best it could be! We couldn’t have done it without you. The kids had a great time. Teamwork was a central theme with the games that the kids played at the Roadrunner Rally. It was terrific to see the CRES students working together and having fun.
It looks like we raised about $7,500. Stayed tuned for the final number which will be communicated in the next newsletter. Thank you to everyone who garnered donations from family, friends, neighbors, and more! We appreciate your desire to support the teachers and students of CRES.
Top Cycle Tuesdays -
Our first Top Cycle Tuesday collection date is coming up very soon! Your student simply needs to send in their clipped (unexpired) Box Tops on or before October 18th. Collections will take place once a month and any classroom that collects 100 Box Tops before each date will earn an EXTRA RECESS! Start clipping those Box Tops now to support CRES!
Marsh Rewards –
The CRES PTO would like to encourage you to link your Marsh Fresh Ideas card to Cumberland Road Elementary. Each dollar spent at Marsh earns our school valuable points that can be used to purchase supplies for the school. Just share the following code at your local Marsh when you sign your card up. Cumberland Road Elementary’s code is: 28438
Grillin’ and Chillin’
Grillin’ and Chillin’ was a HUGE success! Mother Nature provide us a beautiful night, and there were so many Roadrunner families in attendance. Thank you to those who came to CRES and helped make this night so much fun!
Thanks to all the volunteers as well. Many people gave of their time and talent to pull off this wonderful event and we are grateful to them. Without great volunteers this event wouldn’t be possible. We also would like to give a shout-out to the local businesses that donated burgers, condiments, cookies, water, and more.
Open Forum Meeting -
The next CRES PTO Open Forum Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 1st at 7:00pm. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. We hope to see you there!

The Scholastic Book Fair is Coming!!!
The Scholastic Book Fair will be at CRES on October 10th, 11th, and 13th. The fair will be set up in the CRES Library from 4:00-6:30 each of these evenings for family shopping. Students will NOT be dismissed from class to shop at the book fair; they will need to shop with a family member in the evening or online. This year there are extended hours for parents that wish to shop on their own. Extended parent only hours will be from 1:00-3:00 pm on Tues., Oct. 11th and Thurs., Oct. 13th.
Visit our page online at: http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/hse-cres
Our online fair will be available October 10th –October 21st if you cannot make it to the actual fair, or if you want to shop with more choices.
Please consider supporting your CRES library while providing your child with some great books! All sales help fund new books and resources for our students!
In order to have a successful fair, I need parent volunteers. I will be scheduling volunteers each evening. Please contact Mrs. Hicks if you can help! 594-4170 or khicks@hse.k12.in.us
HELP!
In addition to Book Fair Volunteers, Mrs. Hicks needs help in the library! In order for the library to run smoothly, she needs at least 1 volunteer per day to help put books back on the shelves as they are checked in. If you would like to volunteer at school, please consider helping out in our library. Timing is very flexible! Contact Mrs. Hicks if interested: khicks@hse.k12.in.us or 594-4170.
School Dismissal Manager - there's an App for that!
We are excited to announce the launch of our new School Dismissal Manager app. There are now apps for both Android and Apple which can now be found in their respective app stores.
This app is available at no additional charge and there are two ways to find it:
- Parents can go to their app store and search for School Dismissal Manager.
- Parents can go to the School Dismissal Manager homepage where they will find an app announcement with download buttons for both Android and Apple.
Designed to give parents the quick and easy access needed to make changes on-the-run, the app is limited to just the necessities. With the app, parents can:
- Create/Cancel a single exception within the two-week calendar view
- Set Parent Preferences for name, email, password, mobile number, and opting in or out of emails or text notifications
- Contact the school directly via email
- On a day where a child has an exception scheduled, the parents of that child who use the app will receive a reminder notification; this feature is ONLY available in the app
Early Childhood Classroom Peers – For Families in the Fishers Community
Applications for peers in our Early Childhood classrooms are being accepted now. Early Childhood in HSE creates an environment that affords all children the opportunity to develop friendships while becoming leaders and role models. Throughout the educational experience, children will learn about acceptance and diversity. Children enrolled in the four half day (M-Th) Early Childhood classroom will experience a student-centered preschool curriculum enriched with social skills and language skills along with academic activities. The skills and activities are linked to the Indiana State Standards for preschool which are precursor skills designed to promote kindergarten readiness. Children must be at least three years old and not kindergarten eligible. For information regarding how to enroll your child in this enriching learning opportunity, please stop by Brooks School Elementary for an application. If you have any questions about the peer program please contact the early childhood secretary, Beth Kiel, at 915-4250 or send an email to: earlychildhoodcontact@hse.k12.in.us
PastaBowl Results
The 2016 PastaBowl drive set a new record by collecting 15,228 pounds of food! To put that in perspective, that is more food than one local pantry gave out all of last year! Where does all that pasta go? Thanks to the PastaBowl team of Meijer, Harvest Food Bank, Citizens State Bank, ProShred, the Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation, and the Fall Creek Township Trustees Office that pasta was distributed to more than 40 area food pantries in Hamilton County as well as Second Helpings in Marion County. More than generating pasta, the campaign also raises awareness for the one in seven local children that struggle with food insecurities. Because when you're hungry, it’s hard to learn! The tremendous success of PastaBowl is attributed to the leadership and involvement of students at every school. A special congrats to the winners of this year's traveling trophies: Fishers High School, Riverside Intermediate, and Hoosier Road Elementary.

High Ability Parent Book Study
Are you interested in learning strategies to best meet the needs of your high ability child? Hamilton Southeastern School district is pleased to offer a four-session book study on A Parent’s Guide to Gifted Children by James T Webb, Janet L. Gore, Edward R. Amend, and Arlene R. DeVries. The book is considered a classic for high ability parents (Dr. Jan Davison). Meetings follow a discussion format without lectures. Walk away with strategies for addressing intensities, perfectionism, sibling issues, and underachievement. It’s a great way to network with other parents of high ability children.
Sessions will be on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:00 pm at the Administration Building on 13485 Cumberland Road in the West Conference Room. Meeting dates are:
October 18th
October 25th
November 1st
November 15th
The book club is limited to twelve participants, and only one member per family. Late registrants will be placed on a waiting list for a spring morning book club of the same book. I will be offering a book study of Mindset by Carol Dweck in the spring; it will focus on a conversation about growth vs. fixed mindset at a one-time meeting.
I have enough copies of both books for all participants. Books must be returned at the end of the book studies.
If you would like to join the group, contact Meg Strnat, Hamilton Southeastern’s High Ability Coordinator at mstrnat@hse.k12.in.us , who will be facilitating the book study discussions. Please include your child’s name, teacher, and school so that I can send home a copy of A Parent’s Guide to Gifted Children before the meetings start.
