Observations
"When we observe, we are forced to pay attention. We have to move from passive absorption to active awareness. We have to engage." - Maria Konnikova
Over the past three months I have had the opportunity to spend time connecting with students, parents, teachers, custodians, and community members, along with paraprofessionals, counselors, therapists, school psychologists, food service employees, bus drivers, and members of the office staff. Here are some of my observations:
- Nothing can match the enthusiasm of an elementary student on the first day of school. They are happy to be back. Wide smiles on their faces tell the whole story.
- Kindergarten drop-off on the first day of school can be harder for parents than for students.
- Fourth and fifth grade students embrace opportunities to be leaders within the school - an energy which should be capitalized on.
-Many different languages are spoken by our students and their families. Diversity is one of our greatest strengths.
-Parents are engaged. They are looking for opportunities to make the school a better place.
-The Parent-Teacher Association is comprised of energetic, positive members seeking to improve our students’ educational experience.
-Staff members treat each other like family. They love their students, embrace change, and are constantly looking to improve their teaching practices.
- Our custodians take great pride in their work. The school sparkles.
-The Town of Stoughton takes great pride in its school system. Updated technology, instructional materials, and programs to support our students learning should make all residents proud.
- I am one lucky principal.
My observation process will continue as I examine the many idiosyncrasies of the Gibbons School community. I am curious to know- what are some of your observations?
