Constellation-Body Intelligence: Creative Freedom & Response-ability through Sound and Movement
Executive Conference Center • 1601 Broadway (enter on 48th Street)
Kathlyn Hendricks, PhD, BC-DMT
Audrey Hazenkamp, MA, Cert. Master Coach
There are times when the echoes of past experiences interfere with one's full presence and participation in daily life. Constellation is a body intelligence practice that can liberate individuals from their Inner Critic through the healing power of sound and movement. In this half-day experiential workshop, participants will learn how this practice can promote mindfulness and resilience, providing access to the innate wisdom of the body. Participants will learn how this somatically-based healing process can nurture in-the-moment presence and self-acceptance by playing-through rather than working-through. Constellation invites us to respond to life rather than react from past survival strategies, potentially generating new levels of creative freedom. No previous dance experience is required.
11:40 am - 1:00 pm
Anorexia & Neurobiology: Implications for Art Therapy
Executive Conference Center • 1601 Broadway (enter on 48th Street)
Eileen Misluk, MPS, ATR-BC, LPC, LMHC
The 80-minute workshop will integrate didactic information and experiential techniques to introduce the neurobiological effects of eating disorders, particularly Anorexia Nervosa (Arnold & Bulik, 2013). The focus on eating disorders as a brain-based illness will provide the basis for using art therapy as a primary and adjunctive treatment intervention early in treatment as well as throughout the course of recovery. Workshop participants will engage in an experiential activity in which they will explore a healthy functioning brain, as well as a malnourished brain, to gain a deeper understanding of the overall process that takes place within the brain during artmaking. Art therapy interventions will be explored in the context of recovered brain functioning following the re-feeding process (Hinz, 2009).

Multimodal Expressive Arts Therapies for Disordered Eating & Healthy Body Image
Executive Conference Center • 1601 Broadway (enter on 48th Street)
Nancy Sondag, MA, RDT/BCT, LCAT, CDP
Jenn Friedman, BA
Whether you buy into it or not, the myth (and necessity) of the "perfect body" is everywhere. And from the diet industry to digital image manipulations in the media, we are constantly sold on the idea that wealth, love, and happiness can be found "if only we..." This half-day, primarily experiential workshop will present approaches for assisting clients in examining core beliefs, establish meaningful goals for health and well-being, improve body image, and nurture self-esteem. Participants will learn techniques to provide empathy and safety; exercises to help the client recognize how core beliefs affect body image; methods of enactment, tableaus, and metaphors to move the client beyond limiting stereotypes and disordered ways of eating; and uses of art and song creation to establish and affirm new goals for healing and wellness. Everyone welcome — these approaches are valuable for using with most clients, whether or not these symptoms are pronounced.

Emaciated Imagination: Disordered Eating and Symbolic Expression
Executive Conference Center • 1601 Broadway (enter on 48th Street)
Michelle L. Dean, MA, ATR-BC, LPC, CGP
Eating disorders are disturbances of relationships: Relationships to others and the environment, to oneself, to one’s emotions, and to one’s needs, desires, and imagination. This three-hour workshop explores the symbolic nature of eating disorders from a personal, familial, cultural, and environmental perspective utilizing a Jungian and depth psychology framework. This workshop gives participants didactic, experiential, and interactive experiences in exploring one’s imagination through abstract images of Self within an environment. The importance of context and symbolic function in attachment ruptures, trauma, and recovery is discussed as well as the meaningful treatment of such symptoms through a symbolic, image-based means.

Yoga & Art Therapy in Eating Disorder Recovery
Executive Conference Center • 1601 Broadway (enter on 48th Street)
Kristin M. Ramsey, MA, RYT200
Usually by the time an individual faces admission to an inpatient eating disorder unit they have become disconnected from their body and are seeking control in physically dangerous ways. Despite their body feeling foreign, uncontrollable, and, in extreme cases, like a map of traumatic memories and fear, finding safety within that body is a vital step on the path of recovery. This experiential workshop will explore how introducing the chakras and koshas of yogic philosophy, through mindful stretching, guided relaxation, and art therapy, provided patients on an inpatient eating disorder unit the opportunity to create new maps of, and compassionate connections to, their physical bodies. This workshop will include a general overview of the chakras and koshas, how they were introduced to this population specifically, vignettes and art from the actual work, an experiential exploration of the techniques used, and a variety of tools helping professionals can safely share with their clients.

Inner Voice Dialogue & Edible Container Gardens: A Hybrid for Sowing Resilience
New York City Voice Dialogue Center • 630 Ninth Avenue, #212 (near 44th Street)
Bridgit Dengel Gaspard, LCSW
Fran Sorin, author "Digging Deep: Unearthing Your Creative Roots through Gardening"
Horticulture is a primordial practice, and its teachings serve as a metaphor for life. Container gardening provides a unique way to reap its therapeutic benefits within the time and space constraints of urban living. In this all-day experiential Master Class, participants will explore how to incorporate Inner Voice Dialogue (IVD) with the process of tending a plant to promote mindfulness, self-care, and self-acceptance. As a nonverbal activity that immerses the senses, gardening is an effective intervention for a wide range of issues, including mood and eating disorders, addictions, and trauma. The workshop will guide participants through the specific requirements of building container gardens, as well as discuss how gardening, when combined with IVD, can nurture active self-exploration and introspection. From seedling to dinner plate, the plant's life cycle can serve as a powerful symbol for personal growth and inner harmony.

Focusing & Art Therapy: Accessing Body Wisdom through Creative Expression
Executive Conference Center • 1601 Broadway (enter on 48th Street)
Elizabeth A. Baring, MS, ATR-BC, LCAT, LP
Focusing was developed by Eugene Gendlin and colleagues at the University of Chicago in the 1960’s. It is an approach designed to access the body’s wisdom, based on the idea that our thoughts emerge from a "felt experience." Art therapy is a way of externalizing that experience. Art therapist Laury Rappaport, PhD, created an interdisciplinary approach to Focusing, which she named Focusing-Oriented Art Therapy (FOAT®). In this daylong Master Class, participants will be taught how to bring their attention into their bodies, to experience sensations, and then express them through art. Focusing with art therapy is useful for stress reduction, emotional regulation, and attaining general well-being. Using this practice to work with different populations will also be discussed.

Executive Conference Center • 1601 Broadway (enter on 48th Street)
Lia Falzon FOT, DTATI, ATPPP
Lynn McKnight LPC, LPC/S, MAC, CCS, LCAS, ATR-BC
The 12-Step program is a valuable tool for addiction recovery, but some patients need additional assistance to maximize its therapeutic benefits. In this all-day experiential class, the presenters will discuss how to develop a multimodal arts program for drug and alcohol rehabilitation. After an introductory survey of addiction and the 12 steps, participants will learn specific techniques and creative activities to aid the patient towards recovery, including movement and dreamwork. Using both biopsychosocial and spiritual approaches, this workshop will demonstrate how practices in mind-body integration can strengthen rehabilitation. The pragmatics of introducing, developing and implementing a viable integrated program in an alcohol and drug agency will be discussed.
