President's Message
Hello AHMO members,
I hope all is well with you. The COVID-19 pandemic has certainly taken its toll on our families and friends, however, I believe the vaccines give us reason to hope. Let’s continue to take care of one another as best as we can.
We have now entered May and the weather is heating up. Just a few months ago, we were in one the worst winters storms we have seen. Yet, here we are moving forward continuing to serve our great cities and counties.
In March, we celebrate Women’s History Month, remembering women who have impacted our lives. For me, this list of women begins with my mother and extends to the women of AHMO and beyond. In 2018, Texas sent our first Latinas to Congress, El Paso County Judge Veronica Escobar and state Sen. Sylvia Garcia. Esperanza “Hope” Andrade, Texas’ first Latina Secretary of State and Irma Rangel, who was the first Mexican American woman elected to the Texas House of Representatives. I am excited about what the future holds for our daughters and for all women. Whether the field is politics, STEM, the humanities, entrepreneurship or construction, the glass ceiling has been broken. The sky is the limit!
Thank you members for your continued participation and enthusiasm in our professional community, and sponsors for your incredible support and advice.

Conventions are making a comeback, we will start to see increased toursim funds
Conventions, mass meetings and gatherings have begun to return to the city after a year of cancellations. Since the start of the pandemic in March last year, many cities has lost citywide meetings/conventions to cancellations. When you consider the loss and economic impact, it’ affects nearly every sector of many communities. One of the most immediate sectors impacted by conventions is hotels, where room occupancy figures have improved from 2020 but not recovered completely.
As TML plans for an in person convention in October, you will hear of consistent positive trends for the return of convention business. TML president, Martha Castex-Tatum, Vice Mayor Pro Tem of Houston, is excited to have attendees visit Houston this October.
Your AHMO board is planning our con-current session at TML along with our Networking Mixer. More details to come!
