5. a person who exhibits integrity, initiative, perseverance and has pride in one's school, community and self.
Girls
The Lady Brickies traveled to Chesterton for the IHSAA Sectional this past week and competed Tuesday in the 1st round against Michigan City. Freshman Kaitlyn Roscoe scored a GOOOAAAAAAALLL 9 minutes in to give Hobart an early 1-0 lead! Later in the 1st half, senior Cecilia Provins sent one into the back of the net to send the Lady Brickies into halftime up 2-0! Midway through the 2nd half, Michigan City cut the lead in half with a goal of their own which led to a FRANTIC final 20 minutes with both squads playing with everything they had!! Ultimately, it was the Hobart D-D-D-DEFENSE that held the line and sophomore goalie Rylee Cotton had 3 HUGE saves late in the game to help preserve a hard fought 2-1 VICTORY!!
Thursday night, Hobart headed back to Cheesetown for a semifinal match-up with the hosts. The Lady Brickies fell behind early and lost a tough one 6-0 to eventual sectional champion Chesterton. The result was not what Coach Provins and the girls hoped for, but the way our girls BATTLED until the final whistle ... particularly our seniors ... and ALL SEASON LONG no matter what the circumstances ... was OUTSTANDING! Our girls played with so much PRIDE - always playing the game and never the scoreboard. Their EFFORT and DETERMINATION were inspiring.
CONGRATULATIONS to the coaching staff and our girls for allowing us to share the journey this fall and cheer you on with loud voices and PRIDE in our hearts. THANK YOU for representing H-town so well!
Boys
Hobart played Merrillville on Monday night over at Crown Point High School in the IHSAA Sectional - a rematch from the previous Saturday when the Brickies defeated the Pirates 3-0.
In a physical first half of play, the Brickies threatened often but couldn't put one in the net and the score was 0-0 after 40 minutes. The 2nd half was more of the same ... OUTSTANDING D-D-D-DEFENSE on both sides ... until the 68th minute when senior Avione Lane scored a GOOOOAAAAAAALL to give Hobart a 1-0 lead they would hold until the clock struck zero!! Final score - Hobart 1, Merrillville 0
The play of the game (other than Avione's goal) was from junior defender Ian Freimuth who came out of nowhere to deflect a Merrillville shot on goal with his head!!! It was an INCREDIBLE play - one that kept the game scoreless early in the 2nd half, energized the crowd and his teammates, and ultimately helped the Brickies win!!
On Wednesday, Hobart faced the host Bulldogs in the semifinals. CP was literally a head taller than the Brickies at almost every position, including 6'5" Kristian Simakoski. The Bulldogs scored early to take a 1-0 lead, but Hobart BATTLED and played even the rest of the first half and a great save by sophomore goalie Ryan Pimentel in the closing seconds kept the score 1-0 at the break. Ten minutes into the 2nd half, CP scored again to go up 2-0 and though the competition was fierce throughout the contest, the end result was a 4-0 loss which closed the book on the 2020 season. This one was MUCH CLOSER than the final score. Obviously the sting of the sectional loss hurts, but what our boys have shown us is something to be VERY PROUD OF! This group has shown INITIATIVE, put in lots of WORK WORK WORK, and PERSEVERED the tough times to arrive at where they are today. Hobart finished with a 9-5-2 record in 2020 ... NOT TOO SHABBY!
CONGRATULATIONS to the coaching staff and all of our boys on a GREAT year! THANK YOU for how you've represented what a BRICKIE is all about!

4. a person who strives for the best
Yesterday, both the girls & boys harriers traveled to Hebron High School in Porter County to compete in the IHSAA SECTIONAL. In order to advance to next week's REGIONAL, Hobart needed to be one of the top 5 placing teams or our runners had to be in the top 10 among competitors from non-advancing teams.
Girls
On an absolutely PERFECT October morning for a race, the Lady Brickies were STRIVING to put everything they've trained for on the line to advance and gain another week of racing in the IHSAA post-season! This group has been a work-in-progress throughout the season ... improving each week and looking to peak when the time is right. With everything at stake, our girls were at their BEST ... I say their BEST!! Freshman PHENOM Ella Hornak's RUNNER-UP performance ... combined with top 20 finishes by classmate Adriana Arauz (19th) and junior Mikayla Fuentes (20th) ... was just enough to lead Hobart to a 3rd place overall team finish and solidify a birth in next week's IHSAA REGIONAL!! The Lady Brickies edged Hanover Central by 2 pts thanks to gutsy races by senior Lilly Butler (26th), freshman Addy Black (35th), freshman Kylee King (36th), and sophomore Nevaeh Chavez (57th).
This is the 10th CONSECUTIVE REGIONAL QUALIFYING group for the Lady Brickies!! That's one heckuva run :)
Boys
Racing 2nd at Hebron on Saturday morning ... it was the boys turn to put their best effort on the course to punch their ticket to the next round! As much as cross country is considered an "individual sport" in the eyes of the IHSAA, this TEAM ... under the leadership of Coach A ... is filled with individuals who collectively STRIVE to be their BEST when their BEST is needed. On Saturday, they delivered!! Senior Bruce Leipart finished 4th overall and was joined in the top 20 boys by senior Mark Perez (18th) and freshman Ryan Mattel (19th) to lead the Brickies to a 5th place team finish and earned a trip to the REGIONAL!! Junior Joe Meagher (24th) and freshman Owen Stankich (35th) also contributed to the varsity scoring for the Brickies. Freshman Thomas Martin (43rd) and junior Jonah Wells (46th) rounded out the Hobart line-up.
This is Hobart's 13th CONSECUTIVE year qualifying for the IHSAA REGIONAL! GREAT WORK WORK WORK GUYS!!
The IHSAA REGIONAL will take place NEXT SATURDAY MORNING at Lemon Lake County Park in Crown Point. Race time is 10:30 AM. GOOD LUCK!!

2. a person whose job it is to build
After a tough Homecoming loss to Class 2A #1-ranked Andrean, the Brickies throttled KV last week and appear to be BUILDing momentum with the post-season right around the corner. Friday night's final regular season home game featured a clash with NCC foe Highland. Hobart went to WORK WORK WORK early and often ... getting the JOB done on both sides of the ball in one of the most DOMINANT performances of the season!
Ok ... Highland scored first for a 6-0 lead, but that was about it for the Trojans.
After a fumbled punt return was recovered by senior Cam Smith, junior Braden Carlson rumbled into the end zone from 10 yards out and Hobart was on top 7-6. On the Brickies next possession, our boys controlled the line of scrimmage, kept the ball on the ground, and senior Tyler Turley pounded it in from a yard out! Another KV punt gave our boys the ball back ... and when senior Zach "the human highlight reel" Vode caught a short pass from classmate Riley Johnston, took off across the field, shook off what seemed to be the entire Highland defense and danced into the end zone 59 yards later ... the rout was on!! Junior Miki Djankovich sent the extra point through the uprights and the Brickies were up 21-6.
A safety and another Johnston-to-Vode connection put Hobart up 30-6 and the Brickies never looked back in securing the IMPRESSIVE 44-6 VICTORY!!
Johston threw for 173 yds & 3 TDs and ran for another 70 & 1 TD
Turley surpassed the century mark with 101 yds on the ground and a TD
Vode caught 4 passes for a whopping 91 yards and 2 scores
The Brickie D-D-D-DEFENSE was lock-down after the initial Highland score ... holding the Trojans to a mere 133 yds of offense for the entire game! It was an IMPRESSIVE performance to say the least. These guys appear to be getting pretty good at doing their JOB and are BUILDING quite the resume of awesomeness!
Hobart will travel to Munster next Friday night to close out the regular season! GOOD LUCK GUYS!!

Volleyball
7. one who is courageous, caring and cooperative.
This fall, our volleyball girls have shown us all an important part about being a BRICKIE.
Along with celebrating our seniors and their parents a week ago in a THRILLING win over Griffith, the Lady Brickies hosted a DIG PINK night in their regular season home finale to honor those who have battled and are currently battling cancer and raise money for the American Cancer Society. Prior to the varsity warm-ups, each Lady Brickie showed great CARE in honoring either a COURAGEOUS battle being fought or to commemorate the battle of someone who is no longer with us. It was emotional ... it was beautiful. On a night when the scoreboard result was a tough loss to Lowell, the Hobart volleyball team WON in all the ways that really count. THANK YOU to Coach Yanez for bringing this volleyball event back to H-town ... even in a pandemic ... and to all of the parents, sponsors, and supporters who helped make it such a GREAT night to be a BRICKIE! After taking last weekend off, Hobart closed out the regular season this past week with two hard fought NCC losses against Munster and Andrean on Tuesday & Thursday.
Our girls will compete in the IHSAA SECTIONAL starting next week. The Lady Brickies play the host Valparaiso Lady Vikes @ 7 PM on Thursday, October 15th.
GOOD LUCK LADIES! WE BELIEVE IN YOU!!
