THE SKY NEEDS STARS
NUDGE: ROBERTS MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUME 35
Dear Roberts,
When I was a kid my dad used to tell me if you are not growing, you are dying. Of course I wanted to grow, but I didn’t realize sometimes my choices led me to a path of unhealthy growth. I learned quickly that without direction, you wound up wherever the road ends up. The direction you are currently traveling professionally, will determine where you end up. Bottom line is that your direction determines destination. What does unhealthy growth look like in a school? Growth for growth sake is the ideology of a cancer cell. Don't forget that cancer cells also grow and they move fast. You have to begin with the end in mind to help navigate the path that will ultimately get you to your north. You have to have a clear vision of your desired direction that will determine destination.
To grow intentionally, you have to challenge your assumptions and highlight blind spots in your thinking. The key is to find the action steps that is necessary to pull you towards your goal. No one accidentally becomes a master teacher, instructional coach, assistant principal, counselor, or school leader. This is why your personal windshield must be filled with vivid images of your mission and your why.
We live in the days where school leaders are required to be equipped with intelligence, sound judgment, perception, and empathy in order to create an optimal environment for both staff and students. Are you heading in the right direction? Do people fellow you for these characteristics? If not, you can change your direction.
You are the average of the five people you surround yourself with. Think about your friends, colleagues, and acquaintances. Are you growing into their good or bad habits? Are you pulling forward others into growth? Make sure you know what direction you are headed by taking an inventory of all your actions.
Happy Teacher Appreciation Week. My message to you will always be about personal growth. Thank you for changing the stories of so many kid's lives. You are miracle workers. This week is dedicated to you.
