FASTEST Coronavirus Updates on WDMCS App
We send important updates to families through email, phone, text, and smartphone app posts. Because of the volume of recipients, some email and text notifications are delayed.
The WDMCS app is the FASTEST way to get the most up-to-date communication about the coronavirus and any other relevant information for you and your family from WDMCS.
To download the free app, go to Google Play or the App Store on your phone and look up "West Des Moines Community Schools."

Coronavirus Family FAQs
With the numerous emails sent to our WDMCS families, we wish to consolidate some of the most common questions families are asking onto one page of the WDMCS website.
Q: Will students have to make up the school days missed during the closure?
A: Gov. Reynolds will sign legislation waiving the instructional time requirement for school days missed during the next four weeks (through Friday, April 10). This means students will NOT need to make up any of the days missed between now and April 10. She also requested the authority to extend the waiver, if needed.
WDMCS Events Canceled Due to Coronavirus
WDMCS schools will be closed through Sunday, April 12. However, given the severity of this situation, several large group events and activities have been canceled through Saturday, May 9. This includes:
- Prom (scheduled for April 18)
- Any band, orchestra, or vocal concerts scheduled through May 9
- Any drama performances scheduled through May 9
- Any school spirit days, carnivals, and other parent group organized events scheduled through May 9.
We will keep an online list updated to reflect current information.
Supporting Our WDMCS Staff During Time Off
WDMCS administrators will be presenting a plan to the WDMCS Board of Education on Monday, March 23, that would recommend hourly employees be paid from March 23-April 12. Spring break compensation would be based on employees who would have worked that week.
We are also recommending that certified and salaried staff continue to receive their regular pay without needing to use any paid leave. In addition, teachers will NOT need to make up any of the days missed between now and April 10. We will update staff with details when possible.
We wish to thank all of our WDMCS staff for their dedication. We consider each an important part of our family and are doing our best to support staff, provide timely information, and help ease anxiety. #weareWDMCS
