Poetry Out Loud Competition

We are extremely impressed with Plymouth North and South's Poetry Out Loud competitions this week!

Poetry Out Loud is a nationwide program that encourages the study of great poetry through challenging recitation competitions. By participating in this program, our high school students strengthened their public speaking skills and self-confidence, all while learning about literary history.

English classes, grades 9-12, took part in the competition throughout the month of January with finalists of each class moving on to the main event this week. It was truly remarkable to see the preparedness, poise, and enthusiasm as students performed their chosen poems.

Congratulations to all finalists and winners of the PNHS and PSHS Poetry Out Loud! The winners will now move on to the regional competition in March!

Social Studies

First Annual History Day competition

The Plymouth Public Schools Social Studies Department held the First Annual History Day competition last evening!

The National History Day program is a rigorous independent research project in which students much choose a topic related to the annual theme, conduct extensive research using primary and secondary sources, and create a final project that tells the story of that topic, it's relation to that theme, and its significance in history - no small feat!

Over the last seven months, grades 9-11 honors students at both high schools have worked extremely hard researching and creating these fascinating projects. The best projects of each honors class were invited to participate in last night's competition.

This year's theme is Triumph and Tragedy, which is a prevalent theme in many historical narratives. Students told the story of their chosen topic through detailed exhibits, comprehensive websites, and captivating documentaries. A job well done to all! Congratulations to the final winners who will be advancing to the South Shore History Day competition at Foxboro High School in March.

First graders at Federal Furnace have been busy immersing themselves in Non-Fiction. When reading Non-Fiction they have been learning strategies, like working with partners to understand information, and other strategies for figuring out tricky words. They are also learning to be Non-Fiction writers themselves, brainstorming expert topics, researching to say more, and planning and writing “chapters” of a teaching book.
