Planning for the 2018-19 School Year

In the Park Hill School District, the number of classroom sections per grade level is based on student enrollment. Currently, our student enrollment number projection shows we will have four sections at each grade level. The number of class sections could decrease or increase based on student enrollment changes over the summer.

In following the Park Hill elementary class size guidelines, we need 73 kindergarten students to maintain four sections; 73 first grade students to maintain four sections; 79 second grade students to maintain four sections; 79 third grade students to maintain four sections; 85 fourth grade students to maintain four sections; and 85 fifth grade students to maintain four sections. I have indicated our projected enrollments next to each grade level below, as well as the names of teachers who are scheduled to teach at that grade level.

Kindergarten (80) Henning, Knepper, Rosen, Scott
1st Grade (79) Hildebrand, Howard, Lamparter, Langan

2nd Grade (94) Becker, Conklin, Gastel, Schmidt
3rd Grade (91) Dorrian, Gienke, McAmoil, Vorbeck
4th Grade (85) Holt/Waller, Konrad/Smith
5th Grade (87) Galoyan/Miller, Irwin/Saltzman

Grade Level Staff Updates: Mrs. Waller will be joining the fourth grade team. Fourth grade will departmentalize in a similar fashion as fifth grade has for the past few years. Mrs. Waller will share students with Mrs. Holt; Mrs. Waller will teach math and science in room 22, and Mrs. Holt will teach ELA and social studies in room 21. On the other half of the fourth grade team, Mrs. Smith will teach math and science in room 23, and Mrs. Konrad will teach ELA and social studies in room 24. At second grade, Mrs. Becker will be joining the team in room 44. Mrs. Becker has a background of teaching kindergarten and first grade, so these experiences will be beneficial as she begins to collaborate with her new team. Two new teachers will be joining us: Ms. Hilary Rosen taught kindergarten and second grade at Chinn Elementary before moving away. Now that she’s back in Kansas City, we’re excited to add her to our kindergarten team! Ms. Samantha Gienke has taught third grade while getting her master’s degree through Truman State, and we’re pleased to say she will join our third grade team for the coming school year!

A note from our school nurse, Mrs. Walls

MEDICATIONS: As the end of the school year approaches, please remember to pick up your child’s medication from the nurse’s office. By PHSD policy, the school cannot store any medication for the following school year. Any medication not picked up will be discarded on the last day of school. As a reminder, medication administration forms must be renewed annually, and a form must accompany all medication before it can be administered. For scheduled medication that needs to be initiated on the first day of school in August, please ask for a blank medication form when picking up this year’s medication.

Report to Parents

Since one in every 59 children is diagnosed with autism, students are likely to encounter a number of children with the disorder. That's why it's important to foster in students an acceptance of individuals with different abilities.

The attached Report to Parents, Helping Children Understand Autism,” offers families ways to educate their children about autism.

Lost and Found

Items remaining in the lost and found at the end of the day, Friday May 11, 2018, will be donated to the Park Hill Clothing Center.

The Park Hill Star recognition program was started in 2015 to celebrate support staff and teachers whose work is especially noteworthy. Recently, PHSD Superintendent Dr. Jeanette Cowherd visited Union Chapel to congratulate three staff members who were nominated by parents and students. Pictures of these visits are below.

Click here to see who at Union Chapel has been recognized through the Park Hill Star Program last year and this year so far: UC Recognitions

The following is an overview of the Park Hill Star Program:

Our employees are the reason we are so successful here in the Park Hill School District, and we would like to recognize them for all they do for our students.

That is why we present the Park Hill Star award once a month to a pre-K or elementary teacher, a secondary teacher and a support employee.

Nominations are not being accepted at this time, but opportunities will re-open at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year. Thanks to everyone who took the time to nominate a Park Hill Star this year!
