Thankful for our Students

Union Adult Learning Center November 2020

We at Union Adult Learning Center are so moved by the response we have had with our virtual programming. We know that living through a historic pandemic has had new and unthinkable challenges for our students and our community. We want to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for sticking with us and building educational opportunities with us.

We look forward to opening up in person classes, as it becomes safe to do so. In the meantime, we will continue offering classes virtually. Our next enrollment will take place in January, after we return from winter break.

Career Guidance Canvas Course

Career Guidance & Resources has it's own Canvas class! All UALC students are invited to participate in the Career Guidance Canvas Course. Email invitations have been sent out to students. You must join the class and log in to participate. There, you will find all the resources and information in one place. Friday Zoom Calls are recorded and uploaded so that students can access the information if they could not attend. Resources and job listings are updated weekly. Information is on the modules section and is organized by resource type. There are academic resources, career training, resume resources, and other resources. Other resources include: rental & utility assistance, food pantries, health & mental health resources.

Yes, Indeed!

"Indeed is the #1 job site in the world with over 250 million unique visitors every month. Indeed strives to put job seekers first, giving them free access to search for jobs, post resumes, and research companies. Every day, we connect millions of people to new opportunities." This is the concise way that Indeed describes their website. Their purpose is to connect job seekers to employers.

It is quick, easy, and free to make an account. When you create a new account, you upload your resume and fill in the same information to their template. Many of the employers that have jobs posted allow interested parties to apply with one click. Some employers will require the job seeker to apply on their website. This is clear on the actual job posting. Indeed is a fantastic way to quickly filter through listings with salary range, job type, industry type, and how close to you the job is located. Indeed makes it very simple to find and apply for jobs and even has a messaging option to connect employers and job seekers.

UALC Staff Spotlight

HSE/GED Teacher Shelley Stege

Shelley Stege graduated from OSU with a BS in Special Education and retired after 30 years working with students with varied special needs. She has 2 sons and has been married 36 years, yes to the same man! Shelley loves teaching GED and especially to disadvantaged students who haven’t been able to find school successful and rewarding. She currently teaches GED to Women In Recovery and loves to see the women making deposits to their self esteem bank accounts with their small and steady successes. As the child of an addict, she appreciates the challenge and obstacles her students face and know that not all students are traditional learners. She believes that together she and her students can find a way to make learning work for each of them. Outside of GED Shelley is an avid reader, which she only started doing in retirement. She is learning how to oil paint and sometimes the subject actually looks the way she intended. She loves to grow vegetables in the summer and helps care for her father-in-law, who suffers from Alzheimer’s dementia. She is blessed and content. We are happy to have her on our HSE team.

ESL Teacher Tracy Peralta

Tracy Peralta has been one of our teachers at the Union Adult Learning Center since 2011. Tracy was born and raised in Oklahoma. She received her Bachelors degree in Education and her Masters degree in English as a Second Language from Oklahoma State University in 2010. She enjoys teaching English and helping students reach their goals. Tracy married her husband Miguel in 2013 and they have three children, Sofia (6), Gabriel (5), and Leonel (3). Tracy and her husband are teaching their children Spanish so they can communicate with their Mexican grandparents. Their family also enjoys their pet chickens! Tracy teaches CAP Level 1 English class in the morning and Level 4 English class at night.
