Alfredo Moreno Receives Full Scholarship to Tufts University

Gainesville ISD is proud to announce that three GHS Seniors were name finalists in the QuestBridge National College Match program, and Alfredo Moreno was selected as a full scholarship recipient to Tufts University. Tufts University, located 5 miles north of Boston in Medford, Massachusetts, provides students with the resources of a large research university as well as the attention of a liberal arts college. All undergraduate programs at Tufts are offered by the School of Arts and the School of Engineering.

QuestBridge is a national program that pairs high-achieving, low income high school seniors with full scholarships to the nation’s top colleges. Trevor Hall, Jenny Liu and Moreno were three of 14,491 applicants and advanced to the top 5,338 as finalists. Only 767 students, including Moreno, were then selected to be a 2016 College Match Scholarship recipient.

Students selected for the College Match are “matched” to one of QuestBridge’s 38 college partners— admitted with a guaranteed full, four-year scholarship, including tuition, room and board, and other expenses. This is the first year that Gainesville High School had any finalists in the Bridge program, so three finalists and one recipient is a tremendous accomplishment for these students.

GHS Fishing Team

This first year has proven successful for the GHS Fishing team. The team has competed in 3 out of 5 tournaments for the year, with the 4th tournament hosted locally at Lake Texoma on February 11th. After three tournaments, the team is currently sitting in 8th place out of 50 teams in the West Division, with back to back 5th place team finishes in the last two tournaments.

All 8 GHS teams (each team has two students and one community volunteer captain) are in position to qualify for the Regional tournament for a chance to compete at the State Championship in May with a chance to win $40,000 in scholarships. If the season were to end today, each GHS team would qualify for Regionals.

Special thanks goes out to the captains and sponsors of whose commitment makes this team possible.

Coming up: Lake Texoma tournament February 11
The weigh in will take place at Highport Marina at around 3:30 pm. We would like to invite parents and staff to attend and support these young men and their captains.

Reading Red Book Club

Nineteen members of the Gainesville High School Reading Red Book Club spent the day at the YAK (Young Adult Keller) Book Festival on Saturday, January 31. YAK provides teens in north Texas an exceptional opportunity to connect with literature in a non-academic setting and to meet 32 young-adult authors. The RRBC students were able to participate in author panels, an anime/manga presentation, and writing and poetry workshops. Each student was able to spend time in the Escape Hatch getting to know the authors and leave with autographed books. The Reading Red Book Club, sponsored by Librarian Deri David, continues to be a thriving extracurricular activity at GHS, with membership ranging from 40-60 students each year.
