Principal Message
Advent comes from the Latin word meaning "coming." Jesus is coming, and Advent is intended to be a season of preparation for His arrival. While we typically regard Advent as a joyous season, it is also intended to be a period of preparation, much like Lent. Prayer, penance and fasting are appropriate during this season.
Advent is not as strict as Lent, and there are no rules for fasting, but it is meant to be a period of self-preparation. The purple color associated with Advent is also the color of penance. The faithful should fast during the first two weeks in particular and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
The color of the Third Sunday of Advent is rose. This color symbolizes joy and represents the happiness we will experience when Jesus comes again. The Third Sunday is a day of anticipatory celebration. It is formerly called "Gaudete" Sunday; gaudete means "rejoice" in Latin.
Finally, Sundays during Advent, just as during Lent, should not be given to fasting, but instead to celebration because we celebrate the resurrection of Our Lord every Sunday. It is important to remember, however, there are no particular rules for how the laity should observe Advent.

A Reading From The Gospel for Sunday, December 1, 2019
For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, until the day Noah entered the ark, and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man.
Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into.
Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.
The Gospel of the Lord.

Linking Generations ~ Cloverbar
Dear Parents,
Junior High students from École OLPH spent a lovely lunch hour visiting with their partnered seniors from Heartland Housing – CloverBar Lodge at Greenland Garden Centre. They walked amongst the beautifully decorated trees, while doing a scavenger hunt. To witness and hear the stories that were shared by our seniors, of the differences of Christmas’s past, was so rewarding.
While a lot of ancient cultures used evergreens around Christmas time, historical records suggest that the Christmas tree tradition was started in the 16th century by Germans who decorated fir trees inside their homes. … So, some collected evergreen branches or trees and brought them to their homes, in secret. The first decorated trees were adorned with apples, white candy canes and pastries in the shapes of stars, hearts and flowers. Glass baubles were first made in Lauscha, Germany, and also garlands of glass beads and tin figures that could be hung on trees.

For our Community Visit this year, we chose to support our Strathcona Foods Bank.
Students were asked to bring in items to donate to our local Food Bank just in time for the holidays!
We displayed these items and each team then had to guess the cost of the food item in 1940, 1980, 1980 , 2000 and today and record it on their provided Price is Right game sheet. The team to get the most correct answers won a prize!
The Strathcona Food Bank is a charitable organization providing food to families in need in Sherwood Park and rural Strathcona County. It opened in 1983 and is totally operated by volunteers. (They have approximately 150 volunteers.). The Strathcona Food Bank supports a population of 98,381 (2018 census) residents. Compare last year’s donations to the one 5 years ago, it has more than doubled.
When all of our programs have completed these visits, all of our food items will be dropped off in time for Food Bank volunteers to add these to Christmas hampers.
Pictures below are students from Ecole Our Lady Perpetual Help (OLPH) School and their linked seniors from Summerwood Seniors Residence.

Local Fundraiser - A Former EICS Student!!
Dear OLPH families,
I understand that fundraisers are a plenty but I wanted to share a special one that is unique to our community of EICS.
A former EICS student, George Miok, was a soldier who gave his life for our freedoms and privileges of being a Canadian.
Please take the time on Remembrance Day to think about the sacrifices that many brave women and men have made so that we may all enjoy the freedoms that we have.
Every dollar raised from this Jacek Sgt. George Miok Chocolate collection will be reinvested in the children in the community to ensure that the sacrifice of a great man, who gave his life for the belief of those freedoms, shall never be forgotten.

End of Day Procedures
Please make sure that you child(ren) know if they are to take the bus or if they are getting picked up at the end of the day.
Should a student need to confirm their end of day plans, we ask that all students make their arrangements during the morning recess (10:19 a.m. - 10:34 a.m.) or during the lunch hour (12:04 p.m. - 12:47 p.m.).
This will reduce the confusion and rush at the end of the day and will also ensure that your child(ren) does not miss the bus.
If a student comes to the office at the end of the day and are unsure how they are getting home, we will be sending them home on the bus.
