Life in the North
Political Structure
The northerners belonged to the Whig/Republican party.
Social Structure
7 out of every 8 immigrants settled in the North rather than the South
Men

- consumers, not producers
- guardians of "domestic virtues"
- female literature emerged
- formed social networks
Economic Structure
- northerners were likely to be in careers of education, medicine, or business
- industrialization
- transportation was easier in the north
- 1/4 of northerners lived in urban areas
- a lot of northerners worked in factories
Cities
Life in the north differed from the south especially in the way they had their towns set up. The north had tall buildings while the south had spread out plantations.
Women
Women's jobs were mainly weaving and sewing. They didn't get involved with any of the heavy machinery, but instead did the basic women duties.
Railroads
Railroads were really common in the north and they were used for transportation. The factories got the most use out of the trains to get their products around the country. People often rode in trains too for transportation.
