The Fall is always a busy time at Hawley! Mr. Sortino and I spent the beginning of the school year establishing routines, learning names, and creating a positive learning environment for every student.
A few things to remember in order for your child to get the most out of their physical education experience:
1. All students need to wear sneakers to class.
2. If a child is sick or injured and they can't participate in class, please send a note to the school nurse.
Our focus with the children in kindergarten, first, and second grade consisted mostly of teaching them how to move in personal space while respecting boundaries. We also introduced the students to various pieces of equipment including bean bags, scarves, scooters, and of course the parachute!
The main focus of our third and fourth grade curriculum involved administering the Connecticut Physical Fitness Assessment. This test consists of the following activities:
1. The PACER (aerobic capacity)
2. Curl-Ups (abdominal strength and endurance)
3. Push-Ups (upper body strength and endurance)
4. Sit & Reach (Hamstring and lower back flexibility)

If you have a child in third or fourth grade, please anticipate receiving their fitness scores sometime in December!
The highlight of this past Fall was working with Wally Jackson. His family bid on "P.E. Teacher for the Day" at the Monster Mash party. Enjoy the following photos!

Art With Mrs. Perugini and Mrs. Hossler
Kindergarten students have been working with primary colors and color mixing. They have looked at artist Piet Mondrian and his use of primary colors. We will be painting, using his style of art to create a 'heart' composition.
Grade one has looked at Paul Cezanne and the meaning of 'still' life and 'composition'. They will be working with a mixed media, creating their own still life compositions.
Grade two has looked at Wassily Kandisnsky's paintings of concentric circles. They will be pastel painting using apples and artist's style.
Grade three students are combining a sun and moon into a composition and painting with warm and cool colors.
Grade four students have looked at Picasso's Blue Period and monochromatic color. They are working on landscape paintings using monochromatics.
