Wiley Weekly 1/14

Mrs. Wiley's UMAC Crew

Dear UMAC Parents,

Next week during our literacy block we will be introducing a fairy tale unit. To enrich our reading and writing activities, we are asking students to bring in a favorite fairy tale from home (if possible). Since all of our UMAC and fifth grade classes will be studying this genre, there will be a limited supply of texts to check out in the library. The culminating writing project for this activity will allow students the opportunity to rewrite their favorite fairy tale from a different point of view. The more exposure to different fairy tales, the better. If you're able to send in any fairy tales you happen to have at home, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for you continued support!

Social Studies

This week we started another chapter in History Alive. In chapter 8, students are studying how West Africans were captured and brought to America by Europeans. We are learning many new facts about the dilemmas West Africans faced during the 1500’s. This is a difficult time in history to discuss with our young learners. I have been so impressed with the student's maturity and we've had wonderful discussions surrounding this topic.

Shared Reading

This week we read Uncle Jed’s Barbershop. In this memoir, a young girl tells the story of her compassionate and protective "Uncle Jed" who persevered through many obstacles and the doubts of others to achieve his dream of opening his own barbershop. Our team had a great discussion about the positive traits that Uncle Jed possessed and ultimately it was these traits that led him to achieving his dream. I was so impressed to hear my team independently infer the author’s message, or theme of this uplifting text.
