Family Connection January 2020
Early Childhood Education and Extended Day Programs
A note from the Coordinator
Our planning for next school year is underway! At this point we do not have any changes in program offerings or locations.
Included in our annual program planning is a review of our tuition rates. During this process we look at comparisons with similar districts, current trends in enrollment and we consider our anticipated needs and projected costs for the upcoming school year. A thorough review is provided to the BOE and approval of the 2020-21 program rates will occur at the end of this month. Updates will be communicated in the February Family Connection and posted on our website.
This edition of our newsletter is filled with important information on the re-enrollment and placement process for our current families as well as information for families new to the district. We hope that you find it helpful!
We appreciate your ongoing participation in our programs!

Celebrating School Board Recognition Month
January is School Board Recognition Month – a great time to formally honor the crucial role Northville Public Schools Board of Education members play in the lives of children, schools and the community.
Public education is the backbone of American society and local school boards are deeply rooted in this tradition. Their job is to establish the district’s vision, mission and goals and develop policies to achieve them; to strongly encourage continuous improvement in student learning; and to advocate at the local, state and national level in support of public education. This work includes an endless string of meetings and school functions to attend; reams of reports, agendas, proposals and other documents to read and study; and a never-ending commitment to thoughtful consideration of the issues, balancing perspectives, and making difficult decisions that are both fiscally responsible and focused on what is best for students.
“We are fortunate at Northville Public Schools to have a Board of Education that supports our quest to open A World of Possibilities for each and every student that will prepare them for work and life in the 21st century,” said Northville Superintendent Mary Kay Gallagher.” “Together with district leaders, the seven members of the Northville Board of Education develop policies and make tough decisions that help shape the future of our school district, and in turn our community. They bear the responsibility and oversight for an annual general fund budget of approximately $80 million, 7,151 students, 863 employees, and 11 buildings.”

March 2020 Sinking Fund Replacement Millage
On March 10, 2020, Northville Public Schools voters will be asked to consider replacing our current Sinking Fund millage with a new Sinking Fund millage that will extend the current .9519-mill levy from 2021 to 2025 and provide for broader uses of the proceeds, including instructional technology and security equipment. The current levy expires on Dec. 31, 2020. The .9519-mill five-year request is a REPLACEMENT of the existing Sinking Fund millage and would NOT result in an increase over the current millage rate.
If supported, the Sinking Fund millage will continue to provide approximately $3 million each year to fund building and site repairs, along with instructional technology and safety and security upgrades. Priority projects for the next five-year period fall into the categories of Instructional Technology & Security, Energy & Operational Efficiency, and Health & Safety.
The 0.9519 mill Sinking Fund millage replacement, if approved:
- Helps preserve General Fund dollars to accomplish the District’s core mission of instruction and student learning
- Enables students to learn and grow in a safe, secure and healthy environment
- Protects the community’s investment in the School District’s buildings and facilities
- Maintains appropriate learning facilities that enable the District (and the community) to keep and attract residents
Keeps Northville’s taxpayer dollars in Northville!
Northville Public Schools families, staff and community members also have the opportunity to learn more about the March 2020 Sinking Fund Millage Replacement proposal at a series of forums hosted by district leaders, including a number of opportunities scheduled in conjunction with school PTA/PTSA meetings. The purpose of each forum is to provide parents, staff and community members with information about the sinking fund replacement millage proposal through a brief presentation, followed by an opportunity to ask questions about the proposal. Please see link below for more information. Parents, staff and/or community members are invited to attend whichever forum is most convenient. Questions and comments may also be sent via email to: nps@northvilleschools.org
