Girl Scouts

What We Do

About My Troop

This year, I've continued Girl Scouts and I'm in my 5th or 6th year. I'm a Cadette and my troop is awesome! In my troop are Kelli, Sara, Julia, Sophia, Emmy, Jordan, Hannah, Jillian, Madelyn, Chelsea, me, and a few older girls. Our leader, Mrs. Hassis, is all about community service and helping people. It's a lot of fun!

Making A Change

During our few years as as Cadettes we will be doing plenty of projects. Some of these include going to the senior home, helping kids at Cradles To Crayons, making shoe-boxes for kids in Africa and other foreign countries, earning our silver award, selling cookies, other sales and so much more! I can't wait to help make a change!

Cradles to Crayons

So far this year we have been to Cradles to Crayons once, we scrubbed the dirt and muck off of shoes for kids. Surprisingly it was a lot of fun. We scrubbed the shoes because there are kids in Pennsylvania that don't have clean or new shoes to wear. Most don't even have what they need to go to school, including clothes, backpacks, books and supplies. This week most of our troop will be heading back to help some more, and we will be going back at least two more times in THIS YEAR (school year).

Shoe Boxes

We will be taking paper shoe boxes for an organization, folding them, and stuffing them with things that kids need. They will be like Christmas presents to the kids in foreign countries, and our Girl Scout troop will put each one together to fit the kid's needs. I really enjoy helping people and making a change! I can't wait to make them!

Senior Citizens

Recently we went to Brandywine Assisted Living, a senior home (to the left), and played Halloween Bingo. We got to call the numbers, help get chips to the seniors, and even bring them juice. Each table had a few girls to help the seniors put the chips on the right numbers. The people at my table were very kind. Me and my friend Jillian got to be "flight attendants", as she called us, and serve juice to the seniors. We all really loved it and it was a lot of fun.

Thanksgiving Dinner

Some of the girls and their families will be helping serve Thanksgiving dinner to the homeless this year. We are going to a kind of soup kitchen or building where these people can get food. I'm guessing that they'll get all sorts of turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing. Even if it's not super fancy, It'll make all of the girls feel good and we'll be helping make sure the homeless don't starve.

Arts and Crafts

On December 18th my troop will be heading to the Norristown Library to make arts and crafts with kids who don't really have enough money to do a lot or really have Christmas presents on Christmas. Around the holidays we tend to do a lot more service, I guess because they need a little bit more around then. I'm really frustrated and sad because I can't go help.

Clean Up!

Our troop is going to make little bags that have travel sized toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and washcloths. We get to donate them to an organization that will go down to the city and hand out these bags to some of the homeless who are going for job interviews so they aren't so dirty and make a good first impression. Something as simple as this can help someone stay alive! That's amazing to me!

Silver Award

In Girl Scouts, there are 3 awards, the Bronze Award, the Silver Award, and the Gold Award. Each of these projects has similar standards and requirements. All of the projects require that we do a certain amount of community service. There are also different time restraints. We can only earn our Bronze Award when we're in Juniors (4-5th grade). I think that either the Silver or Gold can only be completed when we earn the award before it. I can't wait to earn the other awards!

Good Reads and Treats

At the beginning of this school year we had a sale for magazines and snacks. We had to do this sale and have everyone have at least one item bought to be able to do other fundraisers like a car wash to earn money for our troop. Each girl got a panflit/folder that held a magazine and a candy brochure so you could select candies and magazines. We accomplished our goal!

Girl Scout Overwiew

I have been in Girl Scouts for half of my life and hope to stay for as long as I can. I really enjoy bring a cadette because we so many exciting projects and trips ahead of us! If you think that all of this sounds interesting, why not sign up to be a Girl Scout next year?
