Parent Teacher Conferences & Spring Break
Message from your Principal
Our hearts continue to ache for the entire community of Parkland, Florida. The tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School left many with a desire to support those directly affected and fiercely protect the safety of our own children.
Many students across the nation plan to honor the victims of the horrific event through a nationwide walkout March 14, which is the one-month anniversary of the incident. These national walkouts are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and last 17 minutes to honor the 17 students and teachers who were senselessly murdered in Florida.
Several students at our school have told us they plan to participate in the student-led initiative. In the event that this does occur, we have a plan in place at our school to ensure students who choose to participate are directed to a secure location on our campus. We will also provide supervision and additional security at our site. Students who do not wish to participate may stay in class as usual.
Our students have a powerful voice, and it is our duty as educators to support our students as they grapple with violence, death, and mental illness. This is an opportunity for us to provide guidance on how students can demonstrate civility while being peacefully engaged in topics of national interest through an educational lens.
Understandably, many students have questions and concerns about school safety. This may be a good time to visit with your child at home about the topic. There are helpful resources that have been made available by National Association of School Psychologists and can be found here.
For information about our district’s student safety measures, visit www.normanpublicschools.org/safety. As always, please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have questions.
Sincerely,
Carie Spannagel
Principal
