Haskin's Vision Statement
At Haskin, we are "Learning Today, Shaping Tomorrow!"
Happy February!
While we are in the middle of milder winter weather, I know that I enjoy “snuggling up” with a magazine or a good book. Reading does many things: takes us away to different places, lets people learn new information, makes us feel different emotions, and the list is endless! Finding time to read together with your child gives you an opportunity to share these experiences which will encourage a love of learning and reading.
Reading aloud to your child is the most important way to encourage a love of reading in your child. Set aside some time everyday and read with your child. WE HAVE AN EXCITING FAMILY ACTIVITY PLANNED that will provide you the opportunity to do this! Be looking for information to come home regarding this TOP SECRET, FUN-FILLED activity.
Has your child ever read a page, gotten to the bottom and said: “I don’t have the foggiest idea of what I read!”? Here are some do's and don’ts that will help your child understand and retain what is read:
Before Your Child Starts Reading:
- Scan the story together for difficult words and review meanings of these words.
- Discuss the general theme of the story.
- Look at the pictures and make predictions about the story.
- Have your child relate the story to his/her experiences. Is it like anything he/she has done or seen?
- Don’t always read school materials. Find a variety of materials to read.
- Don’t make your child “spell out” words he/she doesn’t know. Try blending the sounds together.
While Your Child is Reading:
- Suggest reading silently, before reading aloud.
- Take turns reading with your child.
- Determine the setting of the story - the time and place. If it’s a real place, help locate it on a map.
- Let your child know any unknown words.
- Predict the outcome. (“What do you think will happen next?”)
- Don’t pressure your child into reading for you. Reading should be a pleasurable experience.
- Don’t interrupt often or your child will lose track of the story.
- Don’t correct every miscue- unless not doing so would affect the meaning of the story.
After Your Child Has Finished Reading:
- Discuss the main ideas. (What was the author trying to get across?)
- Identify the facts. (who, what, when, where, why, how)
- Sequence the events of the story. (What happened first, etc??)
- Ask: “Did any part of the story confuse you?”
- Don’t ask all of the questions. Let your child come up with his/her own questions and answers about what he/she read.
- Don’t rush answers. Give your child time to think.
- Don’t ever continue if you feel tense or upset. Stop for a while or find someone else your child can read to.
I hope these suggestions help to make reading with your child a fun and relaxing experience, while sneaking in some opportunities to boost reading skills!

There's a New Face at Haskin!
Mrs. Shirl Gaskin, Head Secretary
Hello everyone! I am excited to join the Haskin team as the new
secretary. My previous job was with Plano High School for the last 8
years, working in the health office. Our family moved from the Quad
Cities to Sandwich 9 years ago. My husband, Larry, and I have 3 (adult)
children. Branden is returning to college this semester. Brianna just
graduated from NIU with a degree in Business. Brady is in the Marines and
stationed in Washington D.C. We enjoy outdoor activities like camping,
hiking, and kayaking. We just added white water rafting to our passions
last summer. I look forward to working with the staff and students at Haskin!

Haskin Celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Monday, January 16, 2017, was the day to remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and all he did to help unite our country. Students came to school on Monday and learned how children were not allowed to go to the same school, drink from the same drinking fountains, or even be friends with other children because of skin color. The students were shocked that people could actually treat each other this way. They are proud of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the hard work he did leading marches and protests to bring attention to these unfair laws. They learned of his famous “I have a dream…” speech and thought of different dreams they each have to make the world a better place.
To commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, each student at Haskin chose a dream they had for either our nation, world, or environment and wrote it on a paper hand. Using these hands, we created a beautiful way to celebrate this extraordinary man.
St. Jude's Reminder
St. Jude Math-a-thon contributions are due Thursday, February 2, 2017. We have participated in St. Jude since 1994. During those years we have collected almost $37,000 in donations. Thank you to the many students participating in this worthwhile cause!
Music Department Update
Second semester is off and running as we start with a Tone Color Unit in music classes. We will learn about different instruments around the world. Second and Third graders will learn instrument families and sound production. This unit will conclude with high school band members coming to the three elementary schools to demonstrate instruments and answer questions from the students.
Please remember to mark your calendar for the Haskin Elementary School concert on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. at SANDWICH HIGH SCHOOL.

P.E. Department News
There is a new P.E. website that parents and students can access for information relating to what we are currently doing in P.E. class. Here is the link: http://adeotifitness.weebly.com/
During the month of January, students have been learning various skills needed to participate in the game of basketball. Students learned about using the pads of their fingers to dribble the ball, how to perform a chest pass and bounce pass, and lastly, how to shoot the basketball using the B.E.E.F. method (Balance, Elbow, Eyes, Follow-through). Coming in February, students will be participating in a cup stacking unit to put hand-eye coordination into practice. Each student will have their own stack of cups to play with during class. We will learn various sequences for stacking the cups in class so that students can do it in their free time at home. We will continue to develop various skills and techniques through individualized games and team building activities.
In other news, we met our goal of raising $3,500 for the Jump Rope for Heart campaign. Mr. Adeoti made a promise to the kids that if that goal was achieved, he would dress up in a funny outfit of their choice. The kids decided they wanted Mr. Adeoti to dress up as a ballerina. In true sportsmanship fashion, Mr. Adeoti was "on point" with his choice! Ms. Greenacre really appreciated his shirt as she is a huge Packers fan!

The kindergarteners at Lynn G. Haskin elementary have been very busy this winter. In honor of the letter “B”, the students all brought in their teddy bears and practiced telling their classmates about their bear. They wrote about what was special about their bear in their journals. The students also practiced sorting, counting, and creating graphs with gummi bears during math centers. The kindergarteners have also been measuring and counting using marshmallows.

FIRST GRADERS COMPLETE BENCHMARK TESTING
The first graders completed their benchmark testing for reading and math during the month of January. They did an awesome job! They completed the MAP assessments for reading and math in the computer lab and have shown some substantial growth since the fall! They will continue to work hard and take these assessments again in the spring. The students also completed the AIMS Web tests in reading and math as well. These test measure the students' ability to read words and identify sounds during one minute tests. The test is also administered for math. These tests require the student to count to 100, identify random numbers, identify the greater number and identify missing numbers. These are also one minute individual timed tests. We will continue to do our best and learn lots of neat stuff in first grade!
