COUNELOR'S CORNER
Hello Families,
Friday, March 26 is International Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Day. There are 5 components of social emotional learning:
Self-awareness
Self-management
Social awareness
Relationship skills
Responsible decision-making
Students with strong SEL skills do better academically, have fewer behavior concerns, are more likely to go to college and have a full time job by age 25. To learn more about SEL and its benefits, check out this short video.
Since March 26 will be an e-learning day, I created a special SEL lesson that will be shared so our students can explore and celebrate their own unique qualities and consider the positive qualities of others. As school counselor, it is my job to teach and coach students in their emotional learning every day, but it is not a job that I do alone. All teachers and staff help students navigate their emotions and relationships each day. As a parent or caregiver, you have lots of opportunities to coach your child in these five areas also. Here are some ideas to try:
Be a good listener, so your child can explore their feelings and process the events of their day with a safe adult.
Model the behavior you seek. Your child will learn to solve problems by watching how you make decisions, solve problems and manage your own behavior.
Nurture your child’s self esteem. Praise your child’s strengths and be encouraging when mistakes happen.
Take advantage of support. Seek the advice of teachers, counselors or other professionals to help your child grow and develop their maximum potential.
If I can be of assistance to help your child reach for the stars, don’t hesitate to contact me.

REGISTRAR'S REPORT
2021-2022 Kindergarten Registration is Underway!
Dutch Fork Elementary is registering rising Kindergarten students now if your child will be five years old by September 1, 2021. Please start at the Registration Gateway portal and provide these documents during your registration meeting: your child's legal full birth certificate (not a hospital certificate), immunization record and proof of residence.
Current 4K Students/ Rising Kindergarten Students 2021 - 2022
Do you know, as the parent/guardian of a current 4K student at DFES, you do not have to register them for 5K Kindergarten? You will receive an email this summer detailing how to complete the Update Portal for returning students.
4K Screening
Screening appointments for the fall are being scheduled now. Complete an application in the main office or online, print and bring it into the office. You will also need to just show your child’s full birth certificate and one proof of residence item (copies are not made at that time).
DFES Online Absence Form
After some slight re-working, the DFES Online Absence Form is available again. It does work better if completed online but parents with email addresses other than @gmail.com have been able to submit absences and upload doctor’s notes. I appreciate all of the feedback and your patience!
Contact Sharon Clemens, 803-476-3917 or at saclemen@lexrich5.org for questions about the information shared here.
