Roadrunner Review
February 2017 Principal Newsletter by Erika Krohn
Principal's Message
Happy February! 2017 is off to a great start. Canyon Rim students committed over 10,000 acts of kindness last week as part of The Great Kindness Challenge! It is my hope that the students got as much joy committing an act of kindness as receiving one. Let's keep the kindness flowing throughout 2017.
In addition to being kind, our students have really been working on showing The Big R: Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Learn behavior. Students earn Big R tickets for showing The Big R in their words and behavior. I pull students' names in a monthly Big R raffle to win meals at local restaurants and small prizes.
I thoroughly enjoyed the 5th and 6th Grade Visual and Performing Arts Showcase on January 31. The music, singing, and beautiful artwork was impressive! It makes me proud to see our students showing such effort and discipline in learning an instrument, art techniques, or vocal skills. Thank you Orange Unified School District for restoring arts instruction in elementary schools!
In classrooms the past month, I've observed many engaging and effective practices such as: T-K students participating in a vehicle parade, kindergarteners using iPads and QR codes to conduct research on trees, 1st grade readers earning many Accelerated Reader points, 2nd graders learning about measurement and velocity by participating in the Potato Derby, 3rd graders using Thinking Maps to analyze the story of Stuart Little, 4th graders taking weekly online comprehension tests as part of the ELA pilot, 5th graders conducting solar system research using multiple resources and reporting out as group, and 6th graders improving their presentation skills in Chatters and Blabbers. As always, it is busy and productive here at Canyon Rim. I thank you so much for your support of your children's education and our school.
Sincerely,
Erika Krohn, Principal
