What's Up In Our Classroom...
Where can you find your student's responsibilities? Schoology! We use the course called "DAILY DUTIES" This is where you will find any work expected of students along with links to videos/review/handouts students need for their success.
We continued to learn about the 7 Habits and are excited to achieve greatness this year! Each of the habits are life skills that set kids and adults up for success! Check out more on the 7 habits below!
Math: We will be starting to work on our first unit in our series on Place Value through the millions. Students will be learning how to read large numbers, the different forms of numbers, see below) and how to round/compare numbers. We are using the new "Think Central" platform for our daily practice on the iPad and students will be rotating through workshop rotations to reinforce the skills we're working on throughout the unit.
Reading: We are working on building our reading stamina while we read "intensely". Our first unit of study is focused on characters and getting to know how/why and what makes them change throughout a story. Together in class, we're reading "Tiger Rising" to model the strategies required of intense readers.
Encourage conversation with your child about what they're reading and even start a book to read together and examine characters and the traits that they display.
Writing: We're becoming writers! Writers keep a "writer's notebook" to spark ideas for stories. To help us get excited, On Monday, we will be sending our writer's notebooks home for student to decorate with things that they love, passions, and anything else that makes them unique and happy! These can be photos, ticket stubs, magazine words/writing or their very own creations! Please send notebooks back to school completed by Thursday.
S.S: Our first unit is on our state government. Students are learning the 3 branches of our state government and are also learning note taking skills as we read to pull out essential information. This unit will make understanding of how our government works more meaningful as we visit our state capitol in October!
Spelling: Next week we will be introducing the routines for our "Words Their Way" spelling sorts. Students have been given a spelling inventory and we have analyzed the patterns that each need to develop. Stay tuned for more information coming next week!
