A Message from Mr. H.
Happy New Year everyone! I hope you welcomed 2019 in a wonderful way. Last week, during student arrival, the front office staff and I handed out quite a few high-fives, hugs, and fist bumps. My heart continues to be warmed by these simple interactions with our Hawks. These greetings go a long way to making our students feel comfortable here at MH. I wrapped up 2018 by visiting with each class to read Because Amelia Smiled and discuss our theme of Choose Kind for this school year. We also decorated some really cool and inspiration Kindness Rocks to decorate our school grounds (see pics below). I hope your students shared stories about the fun we had. We are off to a great start in '19. It's shaping up to be a great year!
Kindergarten parents, you will be receiving your child’s report card on Tuesday, January 29th. As you know, much work goes into reporting your child’s progress towards end of year standards. We know that you may have some questions once you receive the report card. Please know that we are always available to help clarify information and answer any questions you may have. Have a wonderful start to your new year.
Mr. Higgins

Mrs. Silverstein's Reading Corner
Is reading aloud to children important once they are able to pick up a book and read on their own?
The answer is a resounding YES! There are many reasons to read aloud to your school aged children:
• Time spent reading together is a pleasant, valuable, and exciting experience between you and your child
• Reading aloud gives children background knowledge, which helps them make sense of what they see, hear, and read
• Their listening, speaking, reading and writing vocabulary grow larger as does their understanding of what words mean when used in context
• Through reading aloud to your child, you are able to introduce them to new genres of literature such as poetry, short stories, biographies that they might not choose to read on their own
• Reading aloud lets children visualize what is happening in their mind and use their imaginations to explore people, places, times, and events beyond their own experiences.
• Discussing a book with your child supports reading, writing, and thinking skills
• When reading aloud to your child you become a role model for fluent reading
• Your child is exposed to more formal language that is found in books and tends to be grammatically correct versus spoken language that is much more informal.
• Reading aloud is fun and gets your child motivated and excited to read
If you are interested in learning more about reading aloud to your child or would like a list of possible books to read aloud for your family please feel free to contact me at
Book Swap!
Moreau Hall students are invited to participate in the Moreau Hall Book Swap!
Just imagine if you could read a new book everyday…
Bring in a gently used book and trade them in for “a new to you” book to read! The “new to you” book may be a book that will be a family picture book read aloud, a shared reading with a parent, or a book your child can read alone.
The research on literacy confirms what educators have known for years… That the more contact children have with books, the better readers they become.
"The more students read, the better their vocabulary, their ability to read, and their knowledge of the world. Giving students the opportunity to choose from a wide selection of reading materials in their favorite genres and topics develops the “wonder and joy of reading that can only be derived from reading” (Fletcher & Lyon, 1998).
Dozens and dozens of books have been generously donated to the Reading Room in Mrs. Silverstein’s office to start off the book swap. It will take place during the month of Reading Incentive to coincide with the Moreau Hall PAC’s “Fairy Tales” Reading Incentive program.
Here is how it works:
1. Parents must sign a permission slip to avoid books being donated without a parent’s permission.
2. At home, decide which of your gently used books would be good to pass on to another student.
3. Bring the book and permission slip to Mrs. Silverstein’s office in the morning before school starts and choose “a new to you book”.
4. You may come once, once a week, or everyday to swap a book.
Book Swap Guidelines are as follows:
Hardcover or softcover books, chapter books, picture books, joke books, etc. Books must be appropriate reading for PreK-2 students. Books must be in good condition: no smelly books, books with stains, rips, missing pages, or writing in them.
