Mariner Memo
April 12, 2019
April 8th - April 12th
It was another great week at Marine City Middle School. It was also a very important week for our 8th grade students as they completed the PSAT 8. This year, this test not only serves the purpose of helping students prepare for the SAT, but it also satisfied the ELA and Math components of the M-Step, which saved our 8th grade students 4 hours of testing! In the next few weeks, more information will be sent out to you about how we use the PSAT and and when you can expect to see results.
In this newsletter we:
- Note a calendar change for next week
- Highlight our Magnificent Mariner Program Celebration
- Recognize P2
- Celebrate our Student of the Week
Have a great weekend,
Mr. Ming

Historian Robert May came to visit two Social Studies Olympiad students, Judd Brown and Nevaeh Reeves, who both entered Primary Source Journals. Mr May said that their journals were the best he had ever seen. He also gave each student an Indian Head Penny and told them he would see them at the Social Studies Olympiad Award's ceremony on May 4th.

Magnificent Mariners Take in the Tigers
The weather was great and we had a wonderful time. As expected, our students were very well behaved and enjoyed a well deserved and earned afternoon at the ballpark.
Congratulations to all our Magnificent Mariners, keep up the great work!

Speaking of Caught with Character, congratulations go out to our winners this week, selected from our vast collection of good deeds done by students this year. Our grand prize winner was Tara VanBuskirk, who presented on the Science Olympiad to the Board of Education on behalf of Marine City Middle School, an act that showed her bravery. Our runners up this week were Rhys Keever, and Ashlyn Everitt. Well done everyone and keep up the great stuff.
Next week our focus will shift back to the Other People Matter mindset with a focus on Being Present and Giving. It is very easy in this fast-paced world to gloss over the present and to harp on the past or stress about the future. It is much more difficult, and therefore all the more important to be present in the current moment and to embrace the now. Have you ever had a conversation with someone, looking them right in the eye, and not heard a word they had to say, all because you were focusing on what you wanted to say next? I know that I have been guilty of this, and it is becoming all too common in our relationships with others. Embracing the moment and being fully present is giving of oneself to that relationship and that is the focus of our learning next week.
