Message From Dr. Waggoner
Dear Parents,
I can hardly believe that April is already here. It seems this year has flown by! March was a busy month. Students in third through fifth grades have been taking the Kansas State Reading Assessments. Math assessments begin the second week in April and will continue through April 27. Students and teachers alike are to be commended for their hard work in preparing for these assessments. It is very important that students are here on those assessment days. If you could help us out with this, it would be greatly appreciated.
We held kindergarten enrollment on Thursday, Feb. 23. I had the pleasure of meeting many Huskies-to-be and decorating cookies with them. What a delight that was! We had a good turn out, but know there are a few we missed. If you know of someone who has a child of kindergarten age next year, please encourage them to come in so we can plan for the year to come. We appreciate everyone’s help with this!
It has been reported that some children are leaving the parking lot without using seat belts. Please remember that all children under the age of 14 must use an appropriate restraint device or seat belt/shoulder harness. Your children are the most precious cargo you will ever transport in your car. Make certain they are buckled up!
There are many activities planned here at Heatherstone during the month of April. Please check your calendars for dates and times so you won’t miss any of these events. Happy spring!
Sincerely,
Dr. Ruth Waggoner, Principal

New Crossing Guard Needed for 2017-18 School Year
With Ms. Shannon's eldest child moving on to middle school, we're looking for a new crossing guard for the 2017-18 school year. Would you like to work part-time? How about only working before and after school on days school is in session? And not having to work nights, weekends or holidays? Need some extra spending money?
If you can answer “YES” to these questions, we're interested in talking to you. No experience necessary. Training provided.
Hours are 7:45-8:30 a.m. and 3:30-4 p.m. on all days school is in session. Compensation is $22 for both shifts. For more information, call Christine at 913-515-7858.
PTO Cookout
The PTO Cookout will be Friday, May 5, during each class's normal lunchtime. We hope to eat outside if weather permits!
PTO will provide a grilled hot dog, chips, carrots, frozen juice pop and bottled water to all students and staff. Parents are welcome to join their child but will not be served lunch. If you plan to attend, please consider bringing a blanket for students to sit and eat on.
Contact Shannon Haney at shannongerke@hotmail.com if you are able to help work a shift setting up, serving and/or tearing down that day.

Moving Over the Summer?
Planning a move over the summer? Or have you already moved? If so, please be sure to let the office know so that we can update your records and prepare for next year.
Below are the district guidelines regarding attending a school outside the area in which you live or outside of USD#233 boundaries. We are happy to provide transfer paperwork and answer any questions you may have about the process.
Student Transfers
Students shall attend the school designated for the attendance area in which the student resides. However, a student may be permitted to transfer to a school outside of the student’s attendance area for exceptional circumstances and highly justifiable reasons.
Non-Resident Students
Non-resident students are those who do not meet the qualifications of resident students. Non-resident students shall not be admitted to the district except under the following circumstances:
- Families moving out of the school district during the school year may submit an application for their children to complete the current school year, not including summer school or extended school year. No transportation will be provided for accepted non-resident students completing the current school year.
- Children of certified/licensed or classified employees in accordance with board policies GBZCF (certified) and GCRGA (classified).
Transfer Procedures
Application: Students and/or parents/guardians may request a transfer to a school outside their assigned attendance area by submitting an application for transfer based upon exceptional circumstances and for highly justifiable reasons.
Elementary Grade Level Applications
Following input from the sending and receiving principals, elementary grade level applications for transfer to another school shall be reviewed by sending and receiving principals. Transfer application requests are either approved or denied, pursuant to other policies of the Board of Education establishing exceptions to the general transfer policy.
The General Administration Office shall notify the requesting party of the disposition of the request for transfer. A copy of each approved transfer will be provided to the receiving school.
