Lower Campus' Weekly Update
January 15-19, 2018
Classroom Culture: Be Proactive, Not Reactive
1- Capable: Students need to know it is ok to make mistakes. Celebrate student successes, no matter how small. Build their confidence and create a safe environment where making mistakes is a part of learning. Turn the "I can'ts" into "I cans".
2- Connected: When students feel connected to you and the class, they will be more apt to learn more. Continue to build relationships with your students. Greet them at the door. Talk with them and show an interest in their hobbies and activities outside of school. Give students words of appreciation. Describe their behaviors accurately and focus on the present. Give students affirmations by acknowledging their positive traits. Another way to help students feel connected in your classroom is to show students affection through empathy and kindness.
3- Contributing: Students need to feel as though they are a contributing and important member of the classroom. Encourage students to contribute to the class through completing helpful tasks and even helping each other.
When our students do get upset, remember to stay calm to minimize the situation. Kelly placed a great behavior resource in your mailboxes last week; De-escalating Strategies & Techniques. Please be sure you read and use this resource when working with our students.
With all of these tools in hand, we are setting our students up for success by being proactive while teaching our students (1) they are valued and (2) how to cope when life doesn't go their way. Fostering a positive classroom environment and teaching socio-emotional responses are ongoing all year long.
