Kindergarten

ELA: In May we will do End of the Year testing for PSF and NWF. Please continue practicing breaking apart a word by each individual sound, tapping out CVC words and naming letters and their individual sound.

Math: We will be getting ready to do our final math assessment. Please continue practicing adding and subtracting within 5 with your child.

ELA: First grade will begin Unit 4 in Wonders. This unit will focus on Animals Everywhere. The students will be reading different texts pertaining to animals.

Math: Students will continue to work on adding and subtracting double digit numbers.

Field Trip is May 24th!

ELA: Second grade will be starting Unit 4 in Wonders which focuses on how different environments make the world an interesting place. The students enjoy reading a variety of texts!

Math: Students are continuing to add and subtract numbers up to 1,000 using a variety of strategies. We will begin to look at fractions and arrays which will help to prepare them for third grade.

May 1st is our Field Trip to the Hartford Yard Goats!!!!

ELA: Third grade has started Unit 4 in Wonders which focuses on different ways to meet challenges! We’ll be talking about making good choices, using your skills, and adaptations.

Math: Our final unit in math includes analyzing pictographs and bar graphs, rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100, adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers with regrouping, as well as multiplying.

3rd Grade will be Smarter Balanced Testing May 14th - May 23rd. Please make sure your child comes to school on time!

May 24th is our Field Trip to the Maritime Aquarium!

ELA: 4th grade will wrap up the year with our final unit in Wonders on government. It discusses democracy, our Constitution, amendments, new legislation and many other government-related social studies topics.

Math: We will be diving into geometry for the last marking period. Our focus will be symmetry and attributes of shapes.

4th Grade will begin SBAC testing on May 14th - May 23rd. We will be working on some test prep the first couple weeks of May. Please make sure your child gets a good night sleep, eats breakfast and gets to school on time during the testing window. This way your child will be able to do their absolute best on the test!

ELA: 5th graders will be taking their ELA SBAC tests the week of May 13th. These are very demanding assessments and it is essential your child is on time, well fed, well rested, and ready to work hard! After testing, we will be reading 2 short novels and completing performance tasks to demonstrate our comprehension. We will also be making book hook videos! Check out a book hook example here: Book Hook. In writing, we will write our final story based around a central theme. As always, keep watch on ClassDOJO for the latest pictures from class!

Math: We are heading into testing season….. We will be doing reviews over the skills we have learned throughout the year as well as teaching the new ones. We are moving into more geometry skills. Converting measurements, identifying attributes of shapes and applying those in a project called The Island!

• GYM: We are training for Kids Marathon! get your kids outside running every day!

• LIBRARY: It’s hard to believe that the year is almost over. As the year comes to an end students will be asked to start bringing back any books that they have, so we can collect them all before the end of the year. During the month of May, we will being having a special guest visit the Washington library! Finá Lowman, a graduate from Waterbury schools, will be stopping by Washington on Friday May 17th for an author visit. She has written a wonderful story that she will be sharing with students as well as answering any questions they have. We are really looking forward to it!

Committee News

CURRICULUM: We have determined a protocol and guidelines for displaying student work on LED TVs next year! We are so excited!
