Petoskey stones

The petoskey stone is actually a coral called 'Hexagonaria Percarinata' that lived durning the Devonian age. The Devonian age was 350 million years ago, about 3 times longer before the dinosaur age. That's when Michigan was covered in warm, shallow water, a perfect habitat for coral. To get the coral/stone shiny, you have to grind and polish it. The reason why the coral is called 'Hexagonaria' is because it has 6 sides, like a Hexagon. the stone became Michigan's state stone in 1965.
