Waipawa School
Term 2, Week 3, 18 May 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
COVID, general illness and injury have already hit our staff this term. We've had three teacher aides, a couple of teachers and Sue in the office all out of action so far this week. Unfortunately, there is not a lot we can do apart from fill the gaps when we can and find a way to keep going.
Tomorrow we have our second afternoon / evening of conferences. Teachers really enjoyed the opportunity to sit down and talk face to face last week and we are hoping for a good turn out tomorrow. We realise some families have been unable to make the scheduled time so next week teachers will check in with you and possibly plan another day / time to catch up.
As we aim to get 'normal routines' resumed this term it was fantastic to see our house leaders run their first House Hui on Friday. They actually ran two as we split the year groups. It was a pleasure to watch the leaders working together in preparation and they all did an awesome job. Hopefully the first of many.
We have decided to cap the sports fees to $20 per child this term. We are able to do this because Whanau and Friends have committed to making a donation to subsidise sports. Our aim is to get the cost per sport down to $10 next term and hopefully one day make all sport free. Over the years the Board and Whanau and Friends have really committed to doing what they can to limit whanau dipping into their pockets. It makes such a difference and we're not too far away from having a 'free' school!
Finally, the Year 8's hoodies arrived this week and they look fantastic. A huge thanks to the Board for funding these.
Pink Shirt Day
This Friday 20th May is Pink Shirt day https://www.pinkshirtday.org.nz/
This is a nationally recognised day where we encourage students to wear a pink shirt or something pink if they can. Otherwise, they can just wear mufti.

- We find 4 visits before starting school is usually sufficient. However, if your child requires more we would be in close communication with you.
- Whanau are welcome to stay for the first visit and leave when the child / parent feels comfortable. Subsequent visits we ask that parents be brave and leave so that the child experiences what school is like.
- Please pack a snack for brainfood (fruit, sandwich, muesli bar) and something for morning tea.
- Children can wear mufti clothing or school uniform if they have it available.
Please don't hesitate to pop in and see us if you have any questions or concerns.
