Welcome back to a busy Spring 2 and we hope you all a lovely half-term.
Below you will see what we have been learning and what we will be looking at over the next fortnight. Included below is information on what is coming up over the next few weeks, future diary dates and information about our new FOSPS group.
Our Learning
Pearls
Last half term our theme was ‘Traditional Tales’. We read Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and we couldn’t believe how naughty Goldilocks was! During the week, we built chairs and beds with Lego, we ordered objects according to size, sequenced our story maps and wrote simple sentences. The following week, we read The Gingerbread Man’ and we acted out the story using props. In our provision we made and decorated play dough gingerbread men. We have started using our phonics to write simple CVC words from the story, for example dog, cat. In maths lessons, we learnt about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes and used the shapes to make repeating patterns.
The week before half term our focus changed and we learnt all about Spring Festivals including Chinese New Year, how Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday are important dates in the Christian calendar and we recognised special people for Valentines Day. We tasted different pancake toppings, made dragons from playdough with beads and googly eyes! We made and wrote our own Valentines cards to take home. In math's lessons we learnt about measures, focusing on measuring and ordering lengths and comparing different weights.
This half term our theme is ‘Transport’ we have been reading ‘Wheels, Wings and Other Things’ and ‘Mad about Trucks and Diggers’. We have been writing sentences about different modes of transport, we have also been learning about friction with our cars and ramps! We have been designing and building different modes of transport with our lego. We have been collaging cars, trucks and diggers at our creative table. Outside we have been making a car wash for our cars in the water tray and we have enjoyed riding our bikes and scooters! In maths lessons we have been ordering numbers, finding one more and one less and making teen numbers using numicon.
Over the next few weeks we will be focusing on different modes of transport in more detail, next week we will be learning about trains.
Rubies
Rubies have had a wonderful start to the new term. We are continuing with our Toys topic and the children have created timelines showing when different toys were introduced.
We have finished our newspaper reports in English. We have been using our new editing stations to make sure we have put all our English skills into practice. We are moving on to story writing as our next English theme.
In maths, the children have started to look at money, recognising the different coins and notes, along with their value.
In art, the children have been learning about the colour wheel. They have been learning the primary colours are and how these are mixed together to create secondary colours.
Our science theme for this term is plants. The children will be looking at seeds and bulbs, the needs of a plants, the parts of a plant and the life cycle a plant goes through.
Diamonds
In Diamonds this term, we have been learning all about the Romans as part of our topic theme. We have been learning about why the Romans wanted to create an empire and why they chose to invade Britain.
We have been also continuing with our Roman theme in English and Guided Reading. We’ve been focusing on non-chronological reports and diary entries; writing a diary as a day in the life of a Roman Soldier. The children have also really enjoyed reading “Romans on a Rampage” by Jeremy Strong with its comical version of the Roman times.
In Maths, we have been learning about length and perimeter of different shapes before developing our knowledge on fractions including fractions of shapes and amounts. The children have all been practicing hard on what is a tricky topic!
Science has had the children become ‘green fingered’ as we study plants. We have been learning about the different parts of a plant and what their functions are. The children have then grown their own plants, using it as a tool to learn about what plants need to grow.
Sapphires
A warm welcome back to the second half of the Spring Term, the weeks seem to be flying by! This week will mark the end of reading Percy Jackson – the Sapphires will watch the film and compare the two. The children will continue to study myths and legends by reading Heracles and his 12 Labours and watching extracts of the Odyssey. For the next two weeks, they are writing setting descriptions focusing on The Underworld. The Sapphires will ensure they use expanded noun phrases, similes, personification and metaphors within their descriptions.
The Sapphires are making progress in their mental arithmetic skills and keep practising these skills every Friday. The children can convert measurements and enjoyed completing a practical lesson measuring lengths, calculating mass and capacity. Perimeter and area investigations have been conducted with partners to ensure they have mastered their understanding of area and perimeter. There was an exciting end to the science lessons about circulation, where some of the Sapphires loved dissecting the ox’s heart and this week, the children have started to investigate light. In RE, the children have had some wonderful discussions about beliefs and world views and have created questions they would like to ask significant religious figures such as Ghandi, Desmond Tutu and Malala. As we approach Easter, the children will study Easter festivals and rituals. Jordan from Hull Fc is teaching the children basketball skills.
Over the Spring Term, the children have really immersed themselves in learning about Ancient Greece. Highlights for their Groovy Greeks studies included: food tasting, clay pots, presentations on Gods and Goddesses and research of primary and secondary evidence.
The play leaders in Sapphires have really worked hard on giving the children a choice of activities at playtimes and lunchtimes and because of this, the play leaders will get an opportunity to go to the cinema – well done to all of the play leaders!
It was wonderful to see so many grandparents in for lunch and we are looking forward to the Mother’s Day lunch in a couple of weeks. It will also be exciting to see lots of you at the Easter Bingo. Not long until the children get another reading reward so please upload reads on seesaw.
Red Nose Day, World Book Day and an Easter egg hunt are just some more of the events that the Sapphires have to look forward to in this half term.
Finally, the Sapphires team would like to say a well done to the Y6 pupils for attending boosters and completing SATs revision, we appreciate all the support parents are giving to the children. Keep it up!

World Book Day
Pyjama Fun for World Book Day Thursday 7th March
The School Council have organised for this World Book Day to be a bedtime story theme where we all come in our pyjamas so that we don't have to buy costumes. They have also asked that if your child has a book they have read and would like to swap then bring it along to our book swap.
Red Nose Day
Raising Money for a Local Cause Friday 15th March
This year the School COuncil have proposed that we come dressed in non-uniform as usual but can choose to donate £1 or bring in some food items as this year they would like to support a local charity. The children are going to hold a vote on this after half-term to see which charity the children choose to support.
Online Safety
Today you will have received an email from us about a worrying Whatsapp group that has been happening nationally. None of our pupils seem to be aware of this to our knowledge but it is good to have these national messages so that it is something we can all keep an eye on.
If you would like any advice on supporting your children to stay safe online including on mobile phones then there is useful information on our website including web links to further resources. Please feel free to ask us too if you would like any further guidance.
