Volunteering opportunity! ¡Oportunidad de voluntariado!
After this is complete, it typically takes 2-3 days, you will receive and email that will require proof of vaccination. Once approved, we will connect you first with your classroom teacher for volunteer opportunities. If this is not an option for you, no problem let us know it could be we have other volunteer needs outside of school that would be helpful and in support of our kids. Later, after March 28th fingerprinting will also be required for all volunteers. We are here to help if you need any help navigating this process.
Reading: Foundations, Literature, & Informational Text
The first section you will see on your child’s report card is Reading. We break it into three sections: Reading Foundations, Reading Literature, and Reading Informational Text. Reading Foundations is the “how” of reading. At Witch Hazel, we use a bilingual program called Wonders/Maravillas to teach reading skills and strategies. We start with letter sounds and names and then move into building words, making sentences and reading to make meaning. When ready, your child will move from “learning to read” to “reading to learn”. They will focus on key ideas and details, craft and structure of text, all while making connections to themselves, other texts, and the world. Here are some ways to support your child at home when it comes to reading:
Early Emergent Reader: Focus on the concepts of print like reading left to right, and talking about the pictures in the book.
Emergent Reader: Work with your child on letter sounds and names, building simple words, learning word patterns, and creating simple sentences.
Early Reader: While reading together, stop and ask questions about the story. Retelling the story and naming the characters, setting, and details of the story.
Transitional Reader: Listening to your child independently read the story. Have your child retell the story with details, including the actions and feelings of characters. Readers start to identify the different features between fiction and informational texts.
Fluent Reader: At this stage, your child is choosing “just right books” that they can read fluently and comprehend independently. You will notice that they are using more voice and tone to express the characters, as well as explain in detail what they are reading about. This reader is exploring different genres of books and topics of interest.
Resources to support your child in Reading:
Kid Reads - Books are categorized by age and by genre. There is a link for podcasts and another for book clubs. The newsletter highlights the newest and best on the site.

Lectura: Fundamentos, literatura y textos informativos
