Additionally, here are some great ideas to help prevent the “summer slide!”
Reading News
We will wrap up Quarter 4 with some novel selections and “Book Buddies”. Students will be expected to thoughtfully apply their knowledge of plot, character development, conflict, and theme to their reading responses. As always, students are expected to support their claims with text evidence.
Keep reading throughout the summer!

Math News
We will wrap up Unit 10 - Mastery of Conceptual Understanding of Multiplication & Division this month.
To keep those Math Facts fresh over the summer, students are welcome to access their TenMarks, Freckle, & XtraMath accounts. Parents, you can even set up your own free account for your child so that you can decide which facts he or she is practicing.
Another fun twist to for math fact practice is the Summer Math Challenge presented by Greg Tang, author of picture books such as The Grapes of Math. Click the button below for more details.
Additionally, remind students this summer that math is EVERYWHERE! Going on vacation? Check out a map and calculate how many miles you’ll drive round-trip! Doing some shopping? Challenge your kiddo to estimate how much the total will be!
Social Studies & Science News
We culminated our study of Maryland history with an interactive field trip to the Monocacy National Battlefield. Students thoroughly enjoyed rotations like "Battlefield in a Box", artillery & infantry simulations, and a museum scavenger hunt.
Our present Earth Science Unit - Earth’s Systems: Processes That Shape the Earth has proven to be a particular favorite with many of the students. They really were working hard during our current investigations searching out answers to our driving question - What evidence proves that Earth is constantly changing, and how do those changes impact the way humans interact with our planet? From gathering evidence to making models, students have been engaged and curious about all the changes our planet faces on a daily basis.
Over the summer, encourage your child to continue developing their curious nature. Have them keep track of any current weather changes, read articles or books that center around topics of scientific interest and have them get out and just take the time to explore! These are just a few suggestions that will help keep them engaged and active as they develop as lifelong learners.
Happy Exploring!
Writing News
Culminating our year-long writing resources, students will be guided through the process of Literary Analysis writing. Students will delve deeper into the messages that authors present to their readers, making notes and comparisons as we make our way through this process. Ultimately, students will be writing an analytical opinion - one which analyzes and explores the author’s craft and writing style within a story or essay.
