Voices Of Modern Culture

Culture is many different things; it's made up of values, clothing, tradition, language, etc. The way people view the world can be affected by their culture since some people see things differently. Something like making a joke about someones clothing can be very sensitive to certain people. The most influential idea I learned so far was when we wrote the Theme for English B, and how much someones skin color can impact things like your education so much.

Theme For English B

Go home and write

a page tonight.

And let that page come

out of you-

Then it will be true.

I wonder if it’s that simple?

I am fourteen, asian, born in Pensacola.

I went to school in Hawaii, then to North Carolina, now here

to this high school close to home.

I am one of the few asian people in my class.

The gate leads to the school

by a recreation center, a playground, soccer fields and a skate park.

through the doors, up the steps, to the classroom,

sit down and write this page.

It’s not easy to know what’s

true for you or me

at fourteen, my age. But I guess I’m what

I see and hear and feel, San Antonio, I hear you:

hear you, hear me-we two-you

me, talk in this page. (I hear Los Angeles too.) Me- who?

Well, I like to run, sleep, play soccer, and eat.

I like to read, daydream, listen to music, and laugh.

I want to go to North Carolina for my Christmas present,

spend time with my friends.

I guess being asian doesn’t make me not like

the same thing other folks like who are other races.

So will my page be asian that I write?

Accomplishments

I learned about how the author constructs a book and all of the elements one. When I wrote the essay for Summer of Mariposas it taught me how to analyze a book properly. It talked about the theme, literary allusion, personal allusion, and evaluation, which I never really went in depth in those things.

Goals

My goal in this class to learn more about grammar. I love correcting people whenever they say things like "me and you" instead of "you and I". I want to learn more about using commas and where to properly place them. Also using semicolons instead of commas.

Where I'm From

I am from humidity,

from family all around and homemade meals.

I am from the same hospital my parents were born in.

I am from the beaches

with too many tourist

who stay in the hotels that are overcrowded

and go to restaurants very close by,

we went too

I’m from oranges and popsicles,

from aunts and uncles.

I’m from the strict parents

and laid back family members

from yelling too much!

To laughing too hard…

I’m from buffets and airplane museums

Egg rolls and organic milk

From the magazines my grandfather

Was in,

To the family photos of everyone

Under my bed was a box

Filled with my preschool grade notebook,

Worn out necklaces,

To forget about in a year

I am from these moments--

Snapped before I budde--

Leaf-fall from the family tree.
