College Signing Day

Big picture

Michelle Obama created a College Signing Day on May 1st for schools to rally around students who have committed to higher education. While traditionally College Signing Day was a celebration saved for high school athletes recruited to college, Ms. Obama wanted to give all students the pomp and circumstance surrounding the decision to further one’s education. Our seniors celebrated college signing day on May 1st with a special guest, an announcement of the scholarship offers, and the opportunity for students to sign the logo of the college they will be attending in the fall.

On Thursday, May 16, 2019, all elementary students participated in the field day. We had blow up bounce houses, a water slide, cotton candy, concessions, face painting, relay races, and more! We are grateful for all of the volunteers who helped make the day run as smoothly as possible, but the MSE high school students who helped run each of the activities in particular. Much fun was had by all!

Read To Be Ready Summer Literacy

During the month of June, MSEE will host its first Read to be Ready Summer Camp for a group of 24 rising first through third graders. This half-day summer camp will be STEAM-themed and will provide our young scholars with opportunities to explore the worlds of zoology, engineering, meteorology, ecology, and the arts through literature. Classes will spend time reading, writing, engaging in experiments and exploring various places in the city of Memphis. We are excited about this learning adventure!

Elementary Science with Stakeholders

Big picture
On Thursday, May 9, 2019, our second through fifth graders participated in the first annual Science with Stakeholders event. Teachers, parents, students and community members actively engaged in the celebration of scientific processes as students had the opportunity to explain their projects in great detail to all that attended.

Middle School STEAM Fair

At Memphis School of Excellence, students work throughout the school year on their self-selected STEAM Fair projects. These projects allow students to learn more about scientific concepts on their own terms. Top projects from each grade level were selected by their science teacher to be featured in the school-wide STEAM Fair, which is open to all MSE students and their family members.

High School STEAM Fair

Big picture
Our high school put on an extensive STEAM fair for our school stakeholders. Students were chosen for their interest in math and science. Students created a flying robotic shark, a keep-away game with a robot, and even thermodynamic examples with a heated coke can and an ice bath. All of our students had the opportunity to visit the fair and participate in the experiments.

On Wednesday, May 15, 2019, MSEE recognized and celebrated the newest group of Kindergarten graduates! Our first grade-ready eaglets provided entertainment through song to showcase the immense amount of learning they've accomplished in their first year as scholars, and each student was individually recognized for social and academic achievement.

5th Grade Promotion

Big picture
On Wednesday, May 15, 2019, MSEE promoted its first ever fifth-grade class to the middle school. All fifth graders and their families attended the event, which afforded students the space to reflect on their elementary school journeys and showcase the learning and growth they've done this year. While we are sad to see this group of scholars go, we look forward to following them in their middle and high school careers!

During their last full week of school each year, the eighth-grade class enjoys "8th Grade Week" and a graduation ceremony. The class of 2019 had a great time bowling, visiting their future MSE high school, and running around Golf n' Games with their friends. Our graduation ceremony paid tribute to students who have shown academic excellence and student involvement over their years at MSE. We had the best time celebrating their achievements. Congratulations to the Class of 2019!
