Great Relationships Produce Great Students
WELCOME TO A NEW SCHOOL YEAR
A big Bruin welcome to everyone new and returning to Carl Ben Eielson Middle School this year! We are off to a great start having completed the first week of school. CBE PTA News
The school year has just begun and Carl Ben PTA has already been busy with our first school event of the year, serving Dip-n-Dots ice cream on Back to School night! It was so nice to see so many returning faces and to meet many new CBE families as well.
We have our first volunteer opportunity posted for school picture days Sept. 7, 8 and retakes on the 12. You can sign-up to volunteer here [signupgenius.com].
We would like to thank the following CBE PTA officers who have volunteered for this school year. The PTA board is looking forward to continuing to support our teachers, students and families with engaging program offerings.
Julie Peterson Klein President
Katy Barnum Vice President
Jeff Bakko Treasurer
Darla Bakko Secretary
We need to fill two more board positions for this school year as our Membership Chair and Reflections Chair positions are both open. Both openings include training and access to an experienced mentor, so they are terrific ways to get started in volunteering at CBE. If you are interested in meeting other CBE families or in supporting students with a passion for the arts, these positions are perfect for you! Please reach out to carlbenpta@gmail.com or contact one of the current officers if you are interested in these or any future positions.
What does your PTA membership do at Carl Ben?
Have you ever wondered what your membership means at our school? Your membership helps our school community by providing grants to teachers, bringing in speakers for the student body and community involvement with the end-of-the-year picnic, just to name a few things PTA supports. This year the PTA would like to have record-setting membership to bring in more programs for the students. You can help support expanded family, classroom and student programs by signing up here [app.memberhub.com].
We look forward to seeing you at our first meeting of the year on Monday, September 11, at 7 p.m. in the Carl Ben Eielson Library.
MESSAGES & DELIVERIES FOR STUDENTS
Phone messages for students will be delivered only in case of emergencies. Interrupting a class to deliver a message or to call a student out of class takes instruction time away from the rest of the students. Please remind your student of appointments, rides, etc. before they leave for school. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
ALSO, we do not accept deliveries of flowers, balloons or other non-educational items for students.
Join the FPS Steering Committee
Fargo Public Schools is creating an updated Long-Range Facility Plan to guide major capital investments such as new construction and major renovations. As a part of this work, FPS invites approximately 50 community members to join a Steering Committee charged with representing community voices at key steps in the planning process. The Steering Committee is seeking students; parents; teachers; principals; and community, college and business leaders who will provide the District and consultant team feedback on the facility and demographic assessment data that will be used to create facility options. FPS will also host two sets of public Community Meetings to provide community members the opportunity to provide feedback through surveys and small group conversation that will inform facility options.
Click here to apply to join the Steering Committee. The application deadline is Friday, September 22 at 5 p.m. Steering Committee Members will be selected and contacted the last week of September. The committee will meet from 6-8 p.m. on October 11, November 1, December 5, February 6, and March 5.

Liz’s Closet
A Discreet, Free Resource for Carl Ben Eielson Students in Need
What: Carl Ben Eielson strives as a team to meet the needs of all students as part of our mission to build a foundation for success. Liz’s Closet, a free resource at Carl Ben Eielson, aligns with this mission by providing students in need with items such as clothing, hygiene products, non-perishable food items, etc.
At Carl Ben Eielson, we hope to provide developmentally appropriate support to students in need by offering a means to obtain basic food and hygiene products in a discreet manner. Students utilizing Liz’s Closet will have access to reusable bags, so items are less visible as students are leaving the building.
Where: Liz’s Closet will be located in Student Services. The room being used as “Liz’s Closet” will be accessible through a trusted adult in the building (teachers, counselors, administrators, paraprofessionals, designated staff).
Who: Any student in need of these items is welcome to take what he/she needs with the help of a trusted adult.
How: Although students are welcome to directly ask a trusted adult at Carl Ben Eielson to use Liz’s Closet, to maintain privacy as best as possible, a student can simply draw a star on a sheet of paper and bring it to a trusted adult. The adult will then instruct the student as to when he/she can go to Student Services to collect what is needed. If this adult does not have a time that works for him/her, the adult will notify the appropriate counselor or Student Services staff member to be expecting this student sometime within the school day. Once in Student Services, the student will be escorted to the closet and can take what is needed.
If you know of anyone who may need to utilize this resource, please do not hesitate to contact a Carl Ben Eielson counselor. Additionally, if you would like to donate shelf-stable food, school supplies, or hygiene products to Liz’s Closet, please contact Rachel Johnson (school counselor) at 446-1715.

Entrance to the Building During School Hours
Fargo Public Schools is pleased to announce that we will begin using a new Visitor Management System in all of our schools to strengthen our program of campus safety for students and staff. Part of keeping students and staff safe is knowing who is in our buildings at all times, and the Raptor system will allow us to do so. This system will allow us to better screen visitors, contractors, and volunteers in our schools to provide us with a safe environment for our students and staff.
Upon entering the school building, visitors will be asked to present an ID, such as a Driver’s License or state issued ID, which can either be scanned into the system. Once entry into the building is approved, it will issue a badge that identifies the visitor, the date, and the purpose of their visit. A visitor’s badge will not be necessary for those who visit our schools simply to drop off an item in the office or pick up paperwork.
