‘GROWING GREATNESS / GRANDEZA EN CRECIMIENTO'
THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA
In all my years as an educator and parent I haven’t come across any one thing that has more power to lift someone up or tear someone down quicker than a post on Social Media. As school administrators we are often called on by parents/guardians and students because of a social media post that has negatively impacted the student, who it was about, and they are worried about coming to school. We step in and help the best we can with what can be referred to as cyberbullying. Through our conversations with students we often find that what they say on social media they would not say to the person’s face. We talk about the importance of one’s words and actions and that they both have the ability to impact someone positively or negatively, and to always remember what we want to be remembered for.
We are seeing an increase of social media accounts being created that target both students and staff. Posts that include negative words and/or pictures that target others are cyberbullying. We have talked with our students about this as well as the seriousness of posting negative things about students and staff. We ask that you have a conversation with your student about the power of social media.
I encourage you, as we do our students, to talk directly to us instead of about us on social media. To stop and think about what you are going to post prior to posting it. To ask yourself who may be hurt by the post.
Social Media has the power to lift someone up or tear someone down…. I encourage everyone to use it to lift others up in a positive and productive way. To remember the old adage… “if you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all”. To remember the power of human kindness often requires courage and strength. Together we have the power to do amazing things to lift up those around us.
BAKER PRAIRIE CARE TEAM
One of our goals as a district is to provide equitable education for all our students and to "eliminate barriers, giving students what they need to succeed." At Baker Prairie, one of the steps we have taken to realize this goal is to assemble our BPMS Care Team. This group of parents, guardians, family members, staff, and other community members works together to meet the needs of Baker Prairie students as they arise throughout the school year.
How does it work? Our student interventionist, Brett Curtis, periodically sends out requests to the Care Team for items such as snacks, clothing, bedding, and school supplies. Team members reply if they are able to provide a new or gently used item to meet this request. Last year over 50 students benefited from the Care Team's support and generosity. If you are interested in joining, please contact Brett Curtis at brett.curtis@canby.k12.or.us.
PARENT/STUDENT WORKSHOP
Thank you to the parents and students that were able to join us last week for our student/parent workshop on organization.
STUDENT LOCKER / LOST AND FOUND
Please have your student check their locker and the LOST and FOUND and bring home their belongs.

Future Business Leaders of America: Every other Wed. 2:35-4:00pm (Rm. 107)
Starts Jan. 11th.
In FBLA students get to explore what it takes to run a business. We build problem solving, public speaking, and leadership skills. Our goal this year is to participate in some of the FBLA competitions as well. If FBLA turns into something you love, don’t worry, you can participate in the high school FBLA team when you get there.
As the temperatures get colder, it’s time to start preparing for winter weather! If the weather is severe enough to cancel school, the first day of inclement weather will be a snow day for all! Any inclement weather day thereafter will be an online learning day.
In the event of an online learning day, Canby High School will begin at 8:40 a.m. and all other schools will begin at 9:30 a.m. Students should watch for Zoom links from their teachers. If students have trouble connecting or need help, they should reach out to their teacher. Canby School District strives to make the most of this valuable educational time, but please know that students will not be penalized if they are unable to connect.
To make sure you’re set to receive information about school delays, or closures, and online learning days, please subscribe to Canby School District on FlashAlert. Now is also a good time to update your text preferences online by listing your phone number.
For more information, please see our inclement weather page.
