HOMEWORK / TAREA
Lastly, we would like to remind everyone of our new homework policy. In the best interest of our students and their families, we consolidated our homework practices to be more meaningful and differentiated for each student. Every child should complete their Reading Rockstar logs weekly, including reading at least 30 minutes every night, and practicing math facts with parents through teacher-provided games and activities. Of course, if students would like to do more than that, we welcome their enthusiasm! Teachers may occasionally send additional homework assignments home (completing a writing piece, working on a long-term project, or to reinforce a skill or lesson that an individual student needs to practice), but it will not be every day and it will be based on the individual student's needs. However, daily reading, responding in writing and math fact practice will always be a priority! Though the homework this year has been simplified, it is our expectation that every student spend quality time on these two very important skills each night of the school week. If you have any questions regarding our homework policy, please give us a call at the school.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU
New Year, New You It’s the time of year when we are inundated with reminders that the start of a new year is the perfect time to make changes in our lives: to start a diet or exercise regime, to spend or save money more wisely, to change an old habit, etc. Perhaps you, like thousands of others, have made a resolution like one of these common examples, or set some other goal for your own self-improvement. It’s also a good time for children to look to the new year with some anticipation, and set some goals or resolutions for themselves. Parents can help in their creation, because you will also have to help monitor your child’s progress. One goal might be an academic one (to get better grades, to read more each day, to complete homework without procrastinating, etc.). Another goal might involve developing more responsibility at home by adding a chore, or taking on a task that an older sibling or parent may have been responsible for in the past (setting the dinner table, monitoring the trash or recycling, etc.). An important resolution could also be about how your child will become a better person, and improve their relations to those around them: their peers, their siblings, or parents (to be kinder, more patient, more helpful, etc.). While discussing these new year resolutions with your child, consider how you will be different in 2018. While you may have set some of those typical resolutions we see on television and advertising, have you thought about how you will improve as a parent in the new year? What is something you can do better this year? Could you carve out one Wednesday a month to have a special “date” with your child that is just about quality parent-child time? Could you resolve to read with your child more -- either reading to him/her, having him/her read to you, or read a chapter book together? Could you share a special interest or hobby with your child, teaching them about your love of that topic? Is there a parenting topic you would like to learn more about in the year ahead? In addition to resolving to eat better, save more money, change a particular habit, don’t neglect your role as parent; set a goal for how you will improve in that way as well. A little attention paid to that role could pay dividends for you and your child well into the future, possibly in life-changing ways. If there is particular parenting topic that you would like to learn more about, stop by Hillcrest’s new Family Resource Center, located just inside the main lobby past the security desk. Here you can borrow parenting books, pick up some brochures on various parenting topics, or borrow books to read with your child. Most resources are available in English and Spanish. If you don’t have a specific topic you would like to explore, stop by to browse the resources available to see what might resonate with you. Like I said, one small step, one small change, could make a big difference in the life of your little one -- and your life, too. Here’s to a new year!
