Teachers Who Care

This month, we received the following message from a parent.

'My son worked very hard for many months preparing to lead a service and becoming a Bar Mitzvah. He chose to include his two favorite teachers, one from his past and one a current teacher. This is Ryan with his 2nd grade teacher, Natalie Rinn. Please keep in mind, this is someone who taught him five years ago. She took time out of her weekend to show up at an event for a student that she taught five years ago. She just knew it was important to a former student and he wanted her there - so she came.

We are so lucky to live in a district where students matter so much teachers show up for them time and time again, year after year. They leave lasting impressions on our kids so deep they continue to think about them throughout their lives. Mrs. Rinn is an amazing educator and just one shining example of why I love our district!'

This is Westside. We are so proud of and grateful for our amazing teachers and staff!

Meet Michele Humpal, Westside Speech-Language Pathologist!

May is Better Speech and Hearing Month and Westside Community Schools has a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) in every building! SLPs help students articulate their words correctly and use fluent speech, and collaborate with all educators to support students in increasing vocabulary, answering comprehension questions, expressing thoughts verbally and in writing, and learning the unspoken social rules of communication. They help students find a voice even when a child has minimal speech.

"In my first year in Westside Community Schools, I have had the opportunity to work at Westbrook Elementary School with a diverse population of students with various speech and language needs," says Michele Humpal, one of Westside's new Speech-Language Pathologists this year. "Serving students who range from nonverbal to students with autism, apraxia, intellectual disabilities, emotional regulation challenges, language, fluency, social skills, and articulation needs has challenged me as a professional to incorporate best practices to meet students' needs through an inclusive model. I've been fortunate to work with outstanding special education and administrative teams who always support me and what's best for kids. We push ourselves to improve our practices every day!"
